Sonic the Hedgehog 3 made a strong impact when it premiered last December. Many fans and critics praised it as the best film in the Sonic series so far, with its full celebration of Sonic Adventure 2 finally brought to the big screen. It was a crowd pleaser, a box office hit, and one of the most faithful game to film adaptations in recent years.
Even so, none of that was enough to secure a nomination at The Game Awards. The 2025 list of nominees is now public, and Sonic 3 is nowhere to be found in the Best Adaptation category. It is a surprising omission, and it feels even stranger once you look at the titles that did make the cut.
To be eligible, an adaptation only needs to exist and remain visible in the minds of voters by the end of the year. Sonic 3 appears to have slipped out of view due to its late December release, leaving newer contenders to claim the spotlight instead.
The nominees for Best Adaptation at The Game Awards 2025 are:
- A Minecraft Movie
- Devil May Cry
- Splinter Cell Deathwatch
- The Last of Us Season Two
- Until Dawn

Reactions from fans have not been gentle. A Minecraft Movie was a financial success, but not a critical favourite. The new Devil May Cry anime faced immediate backlash. Until Dawn divided both fans of the original game and general audiences, with many arguing that it barely resembled the source material.
The Last of Us Season Two also stirred controversy. While the series still has mainstream appeal, many longtime fans felt this season drifted too far from the original game. Splinter Cell Season Two did not receive a nomination, yet Splinter Cell Deathwatch did, which only added to the confusion surrounding the list.
As for who might win, that remains unpredictable. Splinter Cell Deathwatch seems to have upset the fewest people, which may help it stand out. The Last of Us Season Two still carries significant name recognition due to its cast and earlier success. A Minecraft Movie could also gain momentum if its massive audience decides to rally behind it.
The winner will be announced on December 11. At the very least, the other award categories appear far more straightforward than this one.
