Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues to blaze past expectations, solidifying itself as one of 2024’s biggest cinematic triumphs. Nearing the end of its theatrical run after a strong holiday debut, the film has climbed into the ranks of the 15 highest-grossing movies of the year, amassing a worldwide box office total of $472 million. This milestone sees Sonic outpacing other major releases like Gladiator 2 and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, further cementing the franchise’s status as a box office powerhouse.

The film achieved an almost even split between domestic and international markets, earning $233 million in the U.S. and $238 million overseas, reflecting Sonic’s global appeal. Additionally, it boasts an impressive 85% critic score and a staggering 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated entry in the franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opened to a triumphant $60 million domestically, easily claiming the top spot at the box office over Mufasa: The Lion King. While Mufasa gained traction in subsequent weeks, Sonic held its ground, outperforming other major releases like Moana 2. The movie’s introduction of Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog proved to be a major draw for audiences. Even after ceding its #1 position, Sonic 3 remained a top contender for weeks, eventually becoming a digital chart-topper.

The film’s monumental success has already fueled excitement for the next chapter in the franchise. Announced shortly before Sonic 3’s premiere, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is slated to hit theaters on March 19, 2027. While plot details remain under wraps, fans can look forward to the debut of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, both teased in Sonic 3’s post-credits scene. Shadow, whose apparent death shocked audiences, was revealed to have survived in a second post-credits stinger, confirming his return in the next installment.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is still playing in select theaters and is now available on digital platforms, where its momentum shows no signs of slowing. The film’s monumental success not only sets a high bar for Sonic 4, but it also proves that the Sonic cinematic universe is here to stay!
