During this year’s GamesCom, SEGA released a lot of info regarding the upcoming Sonic Superstars but also focused a lot on its multiplayer aspect. The game will have 4-player local co-op and an 8-player online mode, where you’ll race and battle other players around the world.
In an interview between Dot Esports’ Adam Newel and Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka, Newel asked Iizuka something that’s been on fans’ minds ever since the initial reveal of the offline-only co-op – why is the co-op aspect of the game not online as well? Iizuka responded, stating:
We didn’t really think about putting in an online mode because then it’s like you’re just playing online with these random people. It doesn’t have that familiar kind of playing together kind of feel for that four-player cooperative mode.

In essence, the team didn’t want to lose the heart of the couch co-op experience with friends, which would’ve been lost with online play.
What do you think of this decision? Do you agree with Takashi Iizuka’s sentiment?
