Professor Pickle

Pickle is a middle-aged human man with fair skin. He has a prominent nose and gray hair, along with large eyebrows that obscure his eyes. He typically wears a brown coat with dark brown buttons, matching brown pants, and dark brown shoes. Underneath, he sports a white shirt with a red bow. Despite his facial features being hidden, his distinctive appearance and attire make him easily recognizable.

Past

Not much is known about Pickle’s early life. Over eighty years prior to the events of Sonic Unleashed, Pickle met Otto and formed a lifelong friendship with him. Inspired by Otto, he pursued a career in research.^[3]Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed. Eventually, Pickle became a professor of ancient literature at Spagonia University, where he taught various classes. He also specialized in Gaia Manuscript research, becoming an expert scientist in the field. During his tenure at the university, he crossed paths with Tails and developed a close relationship with him.

Sonic Unleashed

Shortly before the events of Sonic Unleashed, Dr. Eggman and his robots kidnapped Pickle from his lab in search of his research and the Gaia Manuscripts to awaken Dark Gaia for their Eggmanland project. Pickle was taken to Mazuri and imprisoned in a holding cell in Eggman’s local base.

After the Earth was fractured by Dark Gaia’s awakening, Tails, Sonic the Werehog, and Chip came to rescue Pickle. Freed from his cell, Pickle complained about the poor food but was grateful for his rescue. Before leaving the base, Pickle instructed Sonic and Tails to retrieve the Gaia Manuscripts from a nearby vault and accepted chocolate from Chip.

Back in his lab, Pickle informed Sonic and Tails about restoring the Chaos Emeralds and sealing away Dark Gaia by locating the Gaia Temples worldwide. He provided them with locations and developed the “Uncanny Camera” to counter Dark Gaia’s minions’ possession ability.

Continuing his research, Pickle later joined Sonic’s group in Shamar to facilitate his analysis. Together, they located the Gaia Temples in Adabat and Eggmanland. During the restoration process, Pickle kept in touch with Tails and witnessed the defeat of Perfect Dark Gaia, acknowledging the miracle that saved the world.

Reflecting on the balance of Light Gaia and Dark Gaia, Pickle joined Amy in preparing for Sonic’s return, admitting her foresight about Sonic’s victory.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

In The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Professor Pickle makes two minor appearances. Although he does not appear in person, a portrait of him can be seen in the library room. Additionally, Tails mentions Professor Pickle while describing Spagonia to his detective partner, suggesting they visit him at the university because he makes delicious sandwiches.

Professor Pickle is characterized as wise, calm, and well-mannered, but he also has his own eccentricities, as his mind tends to operate at a unique pace. Despite his typically easy-going demeanor, even in dire situations, he can become incensed about seemingly trivial matters, such as the quality of sandwiches made by Dr. Eggman, when he was kidnapped and trapped inside Eggman’s base.

Pickle’s favorite food is cucumber sandwiches, and he is known to happily share his knowledge while enjoying them. He is somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to these sandwiches, having firm and precise opinions on how they should be made and being particular about even the smallest details. Additionally, he has developed a variety of interests from his studies conducted across the globe.

Pickle is an accomplished researcher in his field, particularly in the realm of ancient literature. He possesses expertise in deciphering the ancient texts contained within the Gaia Manuscripts, making him the sole individual with this knowledge. Additionally, he serves as a proficient teacher, instructing students at Spagonia University, a prestigious institution known for its academic excellence.

In the Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog comic books and spin-offs, Professor Pickle, known by his full name Dillon Pickle, is a human academic hailing from Spagonia. He is affiliated with Spagonia University and is highly regarded as an archaeologist and historical anthropologist in this media.

We cannot live without the night. We all must sleep. We all must rest. Darkness is a part of our world, just the same as light. It may be that the darkness has not been destroyed, but merely laid to rest. It grows strong over the eons, rises up, then is put to slumber by the light. Perhaps that is the true balance of Dark and Light Gaia. That balance may be the very will of the planet itself.
