Ugly Sonic is officially back, at least in fan made form. A new project titled Sonic the Hedgehog: The 2019 Cut is attempting to reconstruct the first Sonic movie as it was originally envisioned before the now legendary redesign. The project is described by its creators as a full fan made restoration of the early version of the film, complete with the original Sonic character model that sparked widespread backlash in 2019.
The team initially planned to release a trailer on December 10, but those plans have changed. Instead, only a brief two second clip has surfaced, showing Ugly Sonic running inside a washing machine. Shortly after its appearance, the creators explained that the full trailer was delayed because they were not fully satisfied with the result. They noted that releasing it prematurely would likely have drawn negative reactions.
The irony has not gone unnoticed by fans. The original Sonic movie famously underwent a massive redesign after its first trailer was released in 2019 and met with near universal criticism. Director Jeff Fowler publicly acknowledged the backlash at the time and assured audiences that changes would be made, a decision that ultimately reshaped the future of the franchise.
In hindsight, the redesign marked a turning point not just for the film but for Sonic as a whole. The movie went on to become a major success, spawning multiple sequels, including a third film already released, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 scheduled for March 19 2027, and an additional event style project currently in development. What began as a cautionary tale became one of Hollywood’s most unlikely comeback stories.
The 2019 Cut exists more as a curiosity than a replacement, offering fans a glimpse into an alternate timeline where the redesign never happened. While unofficial, it highlights just how important that moment was for the franchise and how closely Sonic’s cinematic success is tied to listening to fan feedback.
Whether the full trailer is eventually released or not, the project serves as a reminder of how quickly Sonic’s fortunes changed and why the phrase “Gotta Fix Fast” became synonymous with one of the most dramatic turnarounds in video game movie history.
