Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s first teaser has given fans their clearest look yet at what’s coming next, confirming one major villain and hinting at something more.

The biggest reveal is Metal Sonic. The teaser closes with a clear silhouette of Sonic’s mechanical rival, confirming he will play a central role alongside Dr. Robotnik, who is already set to return. While Metal Sonic briefly appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s post-credits scene, this marks his full introduction as an active threat.

In the games, Metal Sonic is one of Robotnik’s most dangerous creations, built to surpass Sonic in both speed and ability. That rivalry looks set to carry over into the film, especially with the teaser hinting at a darker setting and what appears to be multiple Metal Sonic units.

There is also a subtle hint that another villain could be on the way. References to “chaos,” both from the teaser and the movie’s social media accounts, combined with a strong focus on the Chaos Emeralds, have led fans to speculate that Chaos could be introduced.

Chaos is one of the franchise’s most powerful antagonists, directly tied to the Chaos Emeralds and typically portrayed as a large-scale threat. If included, it would significantly raise the stakes and push the story into a much bigger conflict.

At the same time, there are questions about how much the film can handle. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Metal Sonic, and Robotnik are already part of the lineup, and adding another major villain could risk overcrowding the story. Previous films have worked best by keeping the focus tight.

Nothing has been confirmed beyond Metal Sonic and Robotnik, but the direction is becoming clearer. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 appears to be drawing from Sonic CD while building toward something larger.

The film is set to release in theaters on March 19, 2027.
