The first teaser trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has officially been released, offering a first look at the next chapter in Paramount Pictures’ expanding Sonic film series.

The footage is brief and largely symbolic, but it delivers several major reveals. Most notably, it confirms the return of Jim Carrey as Doctor Eggman, alongside a first cinematic look at Metal Sonic.

The teaser opens with a voiceover from Robotnik, warning that Sonic’s world is no longer safe and hinting at a threat connected to chaos energy. Rather than showing full scenes, the trailer leans into stylized visuals, with the Chaos Emeralds fracturing and revealing flashes of returning and new characters.

Among those shown are Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, confirming the core team’s return.

One of the biggest moments comes with the reveal of Metal Sonic. The character appears in a more polished, cinematic redesign, signaling a major role in the film. His presence also strengthens expectations that the story may draw from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, where he first appeared.

The teaser also confirms returning cast members including Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Live-action returns include James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, alongside Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone.

New cast members include Ben Kingsley, Matt Berry, Nick Offerman, and Richard Ayoade, though their roles have not yet been revealed. The film will also introduce Amy Rose, voiced by Kristen Bell.

Carrey’s return stands out as the trailer’s biggest surprise. At the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Robotnik appeared to sacrifice himself during the Eclipse Cannon sequence. The teaser avoids explaining how he returns, instead leaning into mystery, with hints that could point toward time travel or alternate timelines.

The use of the iconic “Sonic Boom” theme further supports comparisons to Sonic CD, a game closely tied to time-based storytelling.

While full plot details remain under wraps, the teaser sets a noticeably darker tone. With Metal Sonic, the Chaos Emeralds, and Robotnik’s ominous narration at the center, the film appears to be building toward a higher-stakes story involving chaos energy and advanced technology.

The Sonic film series has already surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, with Jeff Fowler returning to direct the fourth installment.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled to release in theaters on March 19, 2027, with an additional spin-off film planned for December 2028.
