GameStop’s upcoming Trade Anything Day might be one of the retailer’s flashiest promotions yet, but despite the name, there are many limits on what customers can actually bring in. The campaign encourages people to trade almost anything, but the fine print includes a number of predictable restrictions. Living animals are not allowed, and neither are items such as jewelry, loose batteries, or computer mice.
The more amusing section comes from a group of Additional Exclusions the company shared on Instagram. Among these satirical entries is an unexpected ban that immediately stands out: Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. The suggestion is clearly meant as a joke, since many of the other excluded items fall into the intentionally absurd category. Still, anyone hoping to test their luck with a copy of Sonic 2006 on December 6 may want to bring a backup item just in case.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 is not the only game referenced, but it is the only one singled out with its own comedic ban. Another entry rejects recently unburied copies of E T The Video Game, which targets only the cartridges unearthed from old landfills. If you still own an untouched original from the eighties, GameStop would accept it.
Other tongue in cheek exclusions range from the entire 2002 Cleveland Cavaliers roster to the mythical riches of El Dorado. Mixed among them are more realistic restrictions, including dirty clothing and illicit drugs. Anyone who has spent time in retail knows that even the most obvious rules sometimes need to be stated clearly.
Surprisingly, Battletoads appears to be accepted, which is amusing given the store’s history with prank calls related to that particular title.
Even with a suitable item to trade, the event may not be ideal for everyone. Large crowds carrying bags of random objects into a small GameStop store could feel more chaotic than celebratory. At least the event does not fall on Black Friday, which should make the overall environment more manageable.
Still, free credit is free credit. If you have something worthless lying around, the promotion could offer a simple five dollars. Just avoid trying to trade in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 on Trade Anything Day. Whatever its reputation, it is still a game, and you can save it for a normal trade in without dealing with the gimmick.
