Poor Silver. With his striking design, intriguing backstory, and the potential to stand alongside Sonic and Shadow as one of the franchise’s top rivals, he could have been a major player in the Sonic series. Instead, ever since his debut in the infamous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Team has struggled to find meaningful ways to use him. What should have been the rise of a fan favorite instead left Silver as something of a punchline, often pushed to the side more than even Metal Sonic.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds might be the game that changes that. Silver is finally getting real characterisation, and players are starting to notice. For long-time fans, it feels like vindication. At last, their favorite psychic hedgehog is being treated with the respect he deserves.
CrossWorlds introduces a rival mechanic where racers exchange unique banter before each match, giving fans a better sense of their personalities. Silver’s lines stand out for being sharp, confident, and surprisingly funny, showing a side of him that has been missing for years. One highlight comes when he goes back and forth with Sage, who usually cuts down every other racer with ease. This time Silver matches her line for line and doesn’t back down.
His resurgence is also thanks to Bryce Papenbrook, who took over as Silver’s voice in Team Sonic Racing in 2019. Papenbrook is Silver’s third English actor after Pete Capella and Quinton Flynn. While some fans were unsure about the change at first, his performance in CrossWorlds has been widely praised. The energy and confidence in his delivery have helped win over skeptics and given Silver new life as a character.
With Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds releasing worldwide on September 25, and early access already live for Digital Deluxe Edition owners, it feels like Silver’s time has finally come. After years of being overlooked, he is ready to shine, and fans are more than ready to cheer him on.
