SEGA HARDlight has announced that the character level cap in Sonic Forces Speed Battle will be raised from 16 to 20 starting September 18, 2025. This is the first time since launch that players will be able to push their characters beyond the long-established ceiling.
“COMING SOON! Level up to 20 and unlock your full potential,” the studio teased on social media, confirming that special event Ring rewards will also be boosted starting September 4th to help players prepare for the increase.
Currently, reaching Level 16 requires a massive investment of time—or money—due to the huge number of duplicate cards and resources needed. With more than 120 characters in the roster and new ones still being added, many veteran players are skeptical about the decision to expand the grind even further.
Community reactions have been mixed. Some long-time fans voiced frustration on Discord and social media. “They should reconsider… this is not a good idea. As someone who has played the game since release, adding this now doesn’t make sense,” one player wrote. Another warned about balance concerns, saying, “Level 20 is gonna be absolutely messed up. They still haven’t balanced the game since the last round of buffs, and now the top tiers are gonna be even stronger.”
Content creators have also chimed in. SonicWindBlue, a well-known Sonic Forces Mobile player, noted, “I don’t want to judge before the new level up system gets implemented. However, there are some questions I have since the announcement is pretty vague. There are so many factors to consider… With 126 characters (+ more coming soon), it is nearly impossible to get a healthy amount of them to Level 20. An increase of the level cap was not something I had in mind. A way to exchange excess cards to Gold Rings was my approach to tackle the issue.”
Whether this update reinvigorates the game or frustrates its community remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: players will be watching closely when the new level cap goes live later this month.
