Colleen O’Shaughnessey, known for her portrayal of Miles “Tails” Prower in both the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and games, has voiced her excitement for a potential Tails-focused spin-off. Following the success of Knuckles on Paramount+ in 2024, O’Shaughnessey believes that Tails’ rich backstory could make for a captivating standalone project.
Speaking with ComicBook, O’Shaughnessey shared her hopes for such a venture, saying:
I think you could absolutely do a spin-off with Tails. An origin story for Tails would be amazing, to see where he came from… a little baby Tails. I would love it. Is it of course amazing to have him with Sonic? For sure, because they are, you know… a sidekick/hero combination. They work so well together. But I think it would be really neat to see where he came from. Why not?
Tails’ journey as Sonic’s loyal companion has always resonated with fans, but his origin—his struggle to find acceptance, his remarkable intellect, and the courage that made him Sonic’s closest ally—offers plenty of room for a standalone story. An origin-focused spin-off could explore these facets, enriching his character and providing fans with a fresh perspective.
O’Shaughnessey also highlighted Tails’ lovable nature as a core reason for his enduring popularity:
He’s adorable. He’s smart, he’s clever, he’s earnest, he’s loyal… he’s your best friend, always. What you see is what you get. There’s no surreptitiousness… he’s not sneaking around, he’s not trying to get something out of you. What you see is what you get. And he’s just so dear. I just love him.
While no Tails-centric project has been confirmed, the two-tailed fox remains an integral part of the Sonic cinematic universe. Paramount recently announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and O’Shaughnessey is set to reprise her role in the 2027 film.
Beyond the big screen, Tails will also return in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a new game recently unveiled at The Game Awards. O’Shaughnessey also confirmed that she’s wrapped her recording sessions for the game.
With the precedent set by the Knuckles spin-off, a Tails origin story could offer a heartfelt and engaging addition to the franchise, exploring his character beyond the sidekick role.
