Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has sped past another milestone at the domestic box office. While it opened with slightly lower numbers than its predecessor, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the “threequill” has shown impressive staying power. Now in its third full weekend, the film’s domestic earnings have climbed to over $160 million, buoyed by a strong $8.9 million performance on New Year’s Day. Internationally, it has added $74 million to its total, bringing its worldwide earnings to an impressive $234 million.
This milestone places Sonic 3 ahead of the domestic total of the first Sonic the Hedgehog film, which earned $146 million during its run. However, it still trails Sonic 2, which grossed $190 million domestically. Globally, Sonic 3 has significant ground to cover to match the sequel’s $405 million total, which included $214 million from international markets. To surpass Sonic 2 by a similar margin, Sonic 3 would need to hit a global total of $500 million—a challenging goal based on its current trajectory.
Whether or not it outpaces its predecessors, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has already cemented itself as a triumphant addition to the Sonic cinematic universe. Fans continue to flock to theaters to enjoy the latest chapter in Sonic’s big-screen adventures.
