Spoilers Ahead for Sonic the Hedgehog 3!

Jim Carrey has expressed enthusiasm for potentially returning as Dr. Ivo Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, despite his character’s seemingly conclusive fate in the third film. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey reprised his roles as both Dr. Robotnik and Gerald Robotnik, the latter of whom resurrects Shadow the Hedgehog to exact revenge on the world. The film concludes with Ivo sacrificing himself to destroy the ARK and the Eclipse Cannon, thwarting Gerald’s plans for planetary destruction. His final act includes a heartfelt message to Earth and his loyal associate, Agent Stone, before the ARK’s explosion.

In an interview with Cinema Today promoting the third film’s release, Carrey shared his openness to returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. While joking about “power-resting” between projects, he emphasized that his decision would depend on the creative team’s vision and praised the fanbase’s energy and ideas. Carrey stated:

I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, “That sounds fun,” then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, “How about if you do this?” They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.

Carrey’s comments echo statements he made before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where he left the door open for a return depending on the proposed storyline. The franchise’s writers, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, also designed Robotnik’s fate in the third installment as a “satisfying capper” should Carrey decide to exit the series while leaving room for a possible comeback. Casey explained:

We knew there was a very real possibility that this might be his last one, and it might be for real, but we wanted to make it a satisfying capper for him. So, if this is the last we saw of Ivo, he had a good, complete story with a real ending that feels satisfying and felt earned.

I will say this, he’s definitely, definitely, definitely dead…unless he survives somehow. [Laughs]

While the deaths of both Gerald and Ivo Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 appeared definitive, the franchise’s history with over-the-top resurrections leaves room for creative flexibility. Gerald perished instantly in the ARK’s energy field, and Ivo was at the epicenter of the ARK’s destruction, making survival seem implausible. However, should Carrey return, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sonic the Hedgehog 4 finds a clever way to explain Ivo’s escape or resurrection, staying true to the series’ penchant for larger-than-life twists.

With the official announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the possibility of Carrey reprising his iconic role continues to build excitement among fans.
