The latest long-range box office projections suggest that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Paramount Pictures is on track for a successful debut when it premieres on December 20, 2024, the same day as Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. According to Boxoffice Pro, the film’s domestic opening weekend is expected to range between $65 million and $85 million, building on the strong performance of the first two installments in the franchise. In line with previous reports, things are looking promising for Sonic’s third cinematic adventure.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie debuted to $58 million in February 2020, ultimately grossing $148.9 million domestically. Its sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, exceeded those numbers, opening with $72.1 million in April 2022 and reaching a domestic total of $190.8 million. Analysts believe the third movie could benefit from the holiday release window, which offers potential for strong holdovers into early 2025, despite competition from other family-oriented films like Mufasa and Moana 2. Additionally, a relatively light release schedule for children’s films in January 2025 positions Sonic 3 for sustained success in the early months of the year.

Much of the pre-release excitement centers on the debut of Shadow the Hedgehog, a fan-favorite character in the franchise, who will be voiced by Keanu Reeves. Shadow’s introduction, combined with the return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and other key cast members, has fueled audience anticipation. The series continues to attract fans across generations, from nostalgic Gen Xers who grew up with Sonic to Gen Z fans introduced to the character through the films.

The release of Sonic 3 underscores the growing trend of successful video game adaptations, which have increasingly proven to be box office hits. As Boxoffice Pro notes, the film’s ability to convert game fans into ticket buyers has established the series as a reliable performer for Paramount. With its action-packed storylines and beloved characters, the franchise seems well-positioned to maintain its momentum.
