Stories

Sonic the Hedgehog – “The Return of Chaotix, Part 1”

  • Script: Nigel Kitching
  • Art: Richard Elson
  • Lettering: Ellie de'Ville

Sonic travels to Never Lake to see the green and blue Miracle Planet return on its monthly three day orbit. He is there to meet his old friend Porker Lewis, who comes down the giant chain linking the world to the lake. Porker has spent a month alone on the Miracle Planet since the destruction of the Metallixes, and while he claims to be fine, his flat speech and distant behaviour immediately seem off.

Down on the surface, the Omni-Viewer brings the Chaotix Crew from the Special Zone to Never Lake, though the landing is rough. They are quickly attacked by a Trooper patrol backed up by two experimental tanks belonging to the Special Badnik Service. Chaotix take out the heavy units, and the two regular Troopers try to escape, only to be destroyed by Sonic when he arrives with Porker.

Sonic introduces himself and Vector notes that Omni has spoken highly of him. Vector explains that they suspect the Miracle Planet has once again become part of a plot by the Brotherhood of Metallix. Sonic insists he destroyed all of the Metallixes, but Omni detects an “energy screen” on the planet. When he cancels it out, its true appearance is revealed: the Miracle Planet has been completely mechanised and reshaped into a giant Metallix head. Espio sums up the mood with a single line: things look very bad.

Appearances

  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Porker Metallix (posing as Porker Lewis) (first appearance)
  • Chaotix:
    • Vector the Crocodile
    • Mighty the Armadillo
    • Espio the Chameleon
    • Charmy Bee
  • Omni-Viewer
  • Troopers
  • Special Badnik Service – two experimental tank units (only appearance)

Continuity

  • The Miracle Planet last disappeared in Sonic, “The Brotherhood of Metallix, Part 4”, leaving Porker Lewis stranded there for a month.
  • Although the Metallixes were believed destroyed in that story, this issue reveals that the Brotherhood of Metallix survived and has cyberformed the Miracle Planet.
  • “Porker”‘s strange manner foreshadows the revelation in the next issue that he is actually the Porker Metallix in disguise. The real Porker is rescued from the Emperor Metallix in that issue.
  • Chaotix last appeared in “Total Chaotix” in Sonic the Comic #53 and #54, which also involved the Brotherhood of Metallix.

Trivia

Decap Attack – “Monster of the Year, Part 2”

  • Script: Nigel Kitching
  • Art: Nigel Kitching
  • Lettering: Tom Frame

Professor Frank N Stein, Chuck D Head, Igor and Head reach the isolated house playing host to the Best Monster of the Year awards, where Chuck is competing in the “Man made” category. The doorman refuses them entry for being late, so Chuck simply dumps him in a dustbin. Inside, Professor Frank bumps into an old acquaintance, Doctor X, whose shrinking man creation is also up for an award, though Chuck promptly stands on it.

While the Professor and Igor take their seats in the audience, Chuck and Head head backstage to find their category. Igor warns Chuck not to start any trouble, which immediately sours his mood. When the other contestants start mocking him, especially a monster clearly modelled on Boris Karloff’s Frankenstein, Chuck loses his temper and a brawl breaks out. The fight rolls on stage just as their category is announced, much to the Professor’s horror.

Knuckles – “The Homecoming, Part 3”

  • Script: Nigel Kitching
  • Art: Nigel Dobbyn
  • Lettering: Elitta Fell

One of Knuckles‘s long lost people, Doctor Zachary, has returned to the Floating Island, pursued by a Guardian Robot that has already destroyed the Master Emerald. With the Emerald shattered, the robot intends to drain the power of the remaining Chaos Emeralds.

Knuckles tries to stop it, but is blasted through a wall by a powerful burst of chaos energy from the robot’s eye beam. Zachary is sure that nobody could have survived the attack and declares that Knuckles is dead. With Knuckles seemingly out of the way, Zachary drops the act and reveals his true allegiance. He has been working with the robot from the beginning, using Knuckles’ eagerness to meet another echidna to gain access to the Chaos Emeralds.

With the Emeralds now powering the robot, Zachary plans to hunt down the rest of Knuckles’ lost people and take revenge on them, then smash Mobius and let the Floating Island crash as a monument to his genius. Using his gold medallion as a key, he enters a cockpit hidden inside the robot’s head, blasts out of the Emerald Chamber and takes off. Knuckles, battered but alive, drags himself out of the rubble and is furious at having been tricked. The real fight is about to begin.

Using a Zoom Tube, Knuckles intercepts Zachary before the robot can leave the Island’s atmosphere and damages one of its arm wings, cutting off any chance of a clean escape. Zachary vows to finish Knuckles off, but the Island’s orbit has carried them into a mountain range. A collision is now moments away and both of them are in the danger zone.

Appearances

  • Knuckles the Echidna
  • Doctor Zachary
  • Guardian Robot

Continuity

  • The Guardian Robot absorbs the power of the Master Emerald in this issue. In the following issue, Knuckles uses the robot’s head as a makeshift replacement to keep the Island in the air.
  • Knuckles later replaces the makeshift Emerald with a new Master Emerald in Sonic the Comic #73, “New Master Emerald”.
  • Doctor Zachary finally reveals his true motives after hints in the earlier parts of “The Homecoming”.

Trivia

Sonic’s World – “Cybernik Strikes Back, Part 5”

  • Script: Lew Stringer
  • Art: Carl Flint & John Burns
  • Lettering: Steve Potter

Shortfuse the Cybernik launches a direct assault on Citadel Robotnik to rescue his friend Tekno the Canary. Smashing into Robotnik‘s office, he quickly destroys every Trooper in sight until only he and Robotnik are left. Robotnik refuses to beg, daring Shortfuse to pull the trigger and kill “the ruler of Mobius“.

The standoff is interrupted by Metamorphia, who holds Tekno hostage. However, she admits that she has lost her shape shifting powers. Tekno immediately turns the tables with a judo throw and floors her. Robotnik again dares Shortfuse to shoot him, but Shortfuse refuses. Instead, he decides that Robotnik will suffer more knowing that he created the Cybernik armour and is therefore responsible for every defeat Shortfuse deals him. Robotnik orders them out, too angry to argue.

Shortfuse and Tekno return to Tekno’s hidden underground workshop. She offers to let Shortfuse use it as a shared base, but he declines, deciding that staying mobile will make him a bigger problem for Robotnik. Before he leaves, he promises Tekno that he will be back.

Appearances

  • Shortfuse the Cybernik
  • Tekno the Canary
  • Doctor Ivo Robotnik
  • Metamorphia
  • Troopers

Continuity

  • Metamorphia‘s powers were removed in the previous issue.
  • Shortfuse refers back to his and Tekno’s destruction of one of Robotnik’s factories in the Chemical Plant Zone, which took place in Sonic the Comic #65, “Cybernik Strikes Back, Part 3”.
