I’ve changed a lot since I started hanging with Sonic… But I can’t depend on him forever.
Miles “Tails” Prower, Sonic Adventure
Miles “Tails” Prower, real name Miles Prower (マイルス・パウアー, Mairusu Pauā), nicknamed Tails (テイルス, Teirusu) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic two-tailed fox and Sonic‘s best friend, longtime companion, and most frequent sidekick. His full name is a pun on “miles per hour“, while his nickname refers to the two tails that let him fly by spinning them like helicopter rotors. Tails is typically portrayed as a kind-hearted, loyal, and highly intelligent young mechanic whose inventions, piloting skills, and technical knowledge often play a major role in Sonic’s adventures.[13]Tails Designer Shares Character's Origins 30 Years After Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Time Extension. . Archived version[14]Sega (1999). Sonic Adventure instruction manual, pp. 20.
Tails was created by Yasushi Yamaguchi during development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a second playable character and a companion for Sonic.[13]Tails Designer Shares Character's Origins 30 Years After Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Time Extension. . Archived version Since making his debut in 1992, he has become one of the franchise’s central characters. Although he was once bullied because of his twin tails, most portrayals describe his life changing after he met Sonic, whom he came to admire deeply. Over time, he grew from a timid follower into a more confident hero in his own right while still remaining closely associated with Sonic.[15]Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Mega Drive) Japanese instruction booklet, pgs. 4-8.[16]. Outside the games, Tails has appeared prominently across the wider franchise, including television series, comics, animation, and the live-action film series. He has been voiced in Japanese by actors including Kazuki Hayashi, Atsuki Murata, and Ryō Hirohashi, and in English by actors including Corey Bringas, Amy Palant, Kate Higgins, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey, the latter of whom has voiced him in most English-language media since 2014 and reprised the role in the Paramount films.[17]https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/characters/Sonic-the-Hedgehog/Miles-Tails-Prower/. . Concept and creation[edit]

Tails was created during development of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a companion to Sonic and a second playable character. After the success of the first game, members of Sonic Team and Sega of America‘s Sega Technical Institute sought to introduce a new character who could fill a traditional sidekick role while also being appealing and easy for new players to identify with.[13]Tails Designer Shares Character's Origins 30 Years After Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Time Extension. . Archived version[20]https://twitter.com/judy_totoya/status/1594372821794586624. Archived version
An internal design contest was held at STI to determine Sonic’s new sidekick. The winning design came from Yasushi Yamaguchi, then an artist and level designer for Sonic Team, who proposed a young fox character meant to hold a “deep admiration for Sonic”.[21]Sonic's Creator - Yuji Naka. . Archived version Yamaguchi later said the character was designed to help strengthen the series’ appeal in Japan, where Sonic was less popular than in Western markets.[22]Yasushi Yamaguchi's explains Tails' creation on the 30th anniversary of Sonic 2. Yuji Naka reportedly asked for a cute fox character inspired by the Urusei Yatsura character Kitsune, while Tails’ two-tail concept was inspired by Myau from Phantasy Star.[13]Tails Designer Shares Character's Origins 30 Years After Sonic The Hedgehog 2. The character was originally developed under the name “Miles Prower”, a pun on “miles per hour“.[13]Tails Designer Shares Character's Origins 30 Years After Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Time Extension. . Archived version Accounts differ on exactly how the final name was settled. Yamaguchi stated that he had intended the character to be called Miles, while American staff preferred “Tails” and eventually reached a compromise in which “Miles Prower” became the character’s full name and “Tails” his nickname.[22]Yasushi Yamaguchi's explains Tails' creation on the 30th anniversary of Sonic 2. Archived version[26]https://note.com/beep21/n/nc711d5372986 Later accounts have also credited artist Brenda Ross with suggesting “Miles Prower” during development, while Naka said in a 1993 interview that the nickname “Tails” may have come up during a meeting with an ABC producer connected to the early animated productions.[27]The People Making Sega's Future. Some aspects of Tails’ early conception also changed during development. Although Naka later claimed the character was at one point envisioned as a tanuki modeled after a UFO catcher plush,[23]Sonic the Hedgehog – Developer Interview Collection. Yamaguchi clarified that Tails had been intended as a fox from the beginning.[30]Yasushi Yamaguchi's illustration for Tails' 25th anniversary. Tails initially had only one tail before being given two for stronger visual impact, and early concepts also gave him fully black, round eyes. Yamaguchi imagined him as five years old during development, though his finalized in-game age became eight.[22]Yasushi Yamaguchi's explains Tails' creation on the 30th anniversary of Sonic 2. Twitter. [30]Yasushi Yamaguchi's illustration for Tails' 25th anniversary. Despite later rumors, he was always intended to be male.[27]The People Making Sega's Future. Beep! Mega Drive. . pp. 46–48
Tails first appeared in 1992. Although he was created for the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the character also appeared in the 8-bit version, which was released earlier and therefore became his first released appearance.[31]. Voice actors and portrayal[edit]

Tails has been voiced by numerous actors across the games, television series, films, and other adaptations. In Japanese, the character was initially portrayed by male child actors in the games before later being consistently voiced by female actors. Kazuki Hayashi voiced Tails in Sonic Adventure, while Atsuki Murata took over in Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Adventure 2, becoming the last male child actor to play him in the games. Beginning with Sonic Heroes, Ryō Hirohashi, who had already voiced Tails in Sonic X, assumed the role and has remained the character’s main Japanese game voice ever since. In Sonic Generations, Tails’ younger counterpart was voiced by Takuto Yoshinaga.[17]https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/characters/Sonic-the-Hedgehog/Miles-Tails-Prower/. . In English-language games, Tails also began with child actors. Corey Bringas voiced him in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Shuffle, after which his younger brother Connor Bringas replaced him in Sonic Adventure 2. William Corkery then voiced Tails in Sonic Heroes, making him the last male child actor to portray the character in the English games. Amy Palant, who had voiced Tails in Sonic X, took over from Shadow the Hedgehog onward. She was replaced by Kate Higgins beginning with Sonic Free Riders, and Higgins continued in the role through Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, later reprising the part in Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps and Sonic Colors: Ultimate. Since 2014, the character’s principal English voice has been Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who first voiced him in the Sonic Boom sub-franchise and later continued in the main games and the Paramount film series.[18]Sonic Boom. . In English animation, he was voiced by Christopher Stephen Welch in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Bradley Pierce in Sonic the Hedgehog, Chris Turner in Sonic Christmas Blast, and Lainie Frasier in the 1996 Sonic the Hedgehog OVA. Amy Palant voiced him in Sonic X, Alicyn Packard voiced him in Sonic Drone Home, and Ashleigh Ball voiced both Tails and his variants in Sonic Prime.[17]https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/characters/Sonic-the-Hedgehog/Miles-Tails-Prower/. . In terms of characterization, Tails is generally portrayed across media as Sonic’s closest companion, a gifted inventor and pilot, and a younger hero whose kindness and self-doubt gradually give way to greater confidence. Although individual portrayals vary between continuities, adaptations usually retain his core traits: his admiration for Sonic, his technical intelligence, his ability to fly using his twin tails, and his role as an essential support figure whose courage grows with experience.[14]Sega (1999). Sonic Adventure instruction manual, pp. 20.[38]Sega (2004). Sonic Heroes instruction manual, pp. 7.[39]Sega (2001). Sonic Adventure 2 instruction manual, pp. 8.
Appearance[edit]

Tails is an anthropomorphic fox cub distinguished by his two tails. He has amber-orange fur with white fur on his muzzle, chest, belly, the tips of his tails, and the insides of his ears. He also has a small black nose, large triangular ears, and three bangs on the front of his head. His usual outfit consists of white gloves, white socks, and red-and-white shoes.
Tails’ appearance has changed over the course of the series. His earlier design, most commonly referred to as Classic Tails, has a rounder body, shorter limbs, and black eyes. In later depictions, commonly called Modern Tails, he has taller proportions, a more rectangular torso, and blue eyes. His fur coloration was also portrayed somewhat inconsistently in early media, where it could appear orange, yellow, or brown, while later portrayals standardized it as amber.[40]ソニックチャンネル. The character’s design was revised for Sonic Adventure as the series transitioned into 3D. Tails, like the rest of the main cast, was redesigned by Yuji Uekawa, who gave him longer limbs and blue eyes while retaining his core silhouette and recognizable features.[33]. The Making Of: Sonic Adventure. Retro Gamer. Despite these updates, Tails has remained visually consistent in the traits that define him, particularly his two tails, youthful build, and generally soft, approachable design.
History[edit]

Origin and early life

Miles Prower was born on West Side Island[41]TailsTube #1 (feat. Sonic). YouTube. with the unusual trait of having two tails. Because of this, other children mocked and bullied him, and the nickname “Tails” became associated with the feature that set him apart.[15]Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Mega Drive) Japanese instruction booklet, pgs. 4-8. For a long time, Tails lived as a shy and lonely child, admired from a distance by others only when they wanted to tease him. His outlook changed after he encountered Sonic, whose freedom, speed, and confidence made a deep impression on him. Tails began following Sonic around West Side Island, gradually learning to embrace his own abilities rather than feel ashamed of them.[15]Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Mega Drive) Japanese instruction booklet, pgs. 4-8.
Meeting Sonic and early adventures
Tails first became directly involved in Sonic’s adventures during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. When Dr. Eggman arrived on West Side Island to gather the Chaos Emeralds and power the Death Egg, Tails followed Sonic into the conflict and proved himself to be more than a tag-along admirer. By the end of the adventure, he had become Sonic’s trusted partner and helped him reach the Death Egg and stop Eggman’s plan.[42]Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Soon afterward, Tails accompanied Sonic to Angel Island when the Death Egg crash-landed there. There, the two repeatedly clashed with Knuckles the Echidna, who had been tricked by Eggman into believing Sonic and Tails were enemies. After fighting through the island and surrounding regions, Tails helped Sonic bring an end to Eggman’s renewed Death Egg scheme and became one of Sonic’s most dependable allies.[43]Sonic the Hedgehog 3. [44]Sonic & Knuckles.
During this period, Tails also took part in several adventures of his own and with Sonic. He opposed Fang the Hunter during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble,[45]Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble. and later starred in his own Game Gear titles. In Tails’ Skypatrol, he pursued Witchcart to stop her from enslaving an island’s inhabitants,[46]Tails' Skypatrol. while in Tails Adventure he battled the Battle Kukku Empire on Cocoa Island, relying heavily on his own gadgets and ingenuity rather than Sonic’s help.[47]Tails Adventure. These solo outings helped establish that Tails was capable of acting as a hero in his own right, even if he still looked up to Sonic.
Tails continued to assist Sonic in many later conflicts. Among other incidents, he helped stop Eggman from exploiting the Phantom Ruby,[48]Sonic Mania. encountered older and younger versions of himself during the temporal distortions of Sonic Generations,[49]Sonic Generations. and aided Sonic in destroying the Death Egg mk.II in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II[50]Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II.
Growth into a hero
A major turning point in Tails’ personal development came during the events of Sonic Adventure. After Sonic and his friends became involved in Eggman’s plan to exploit the destructive water god Chaos, Tails was separated from Sonic and forced to confront danger without him. When Station Square came under threat and Sonic was not around to save the day, Tails stepped up on his own, saved the city from Eggman’s attack, and proved to himself that he did not need to live forever in Sonic’s shadow. This experience marked one of the most important moments in his growth from nervous sidekick to independent hero.[51]Sonic Adventure.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Tails again took a leading role when Sonic was framed and imprisoned on Prison Island. Tails helped break him out and directly opposed Eggman, piloting the Cyclone mech and using a fake Chaos Emerald as part of the heroes’ plan. The conflict deepened Tails’ rivalry with Eggman and further highlighted his technical skill and willingness to put himself in danger for his friends.[52]Sonic Adventure 2.
He later became one of the three members of Team Sonic alongside Sonic and Knuckles in Sonic Heroes, where the trio worked together to stop Neo Metal Sonic after he seized control of the Eggman Empire.[53]Sonic Heroes. Around the same time, Tails also befriended Emerl in Sonic Battle, only to learn that the robot was an ancient weapon whose fate became one of the more tragic episodes in the series.[54]Sonic Battle.
Across later adventures, Tails remained a central support figure in Sonic’s circle. He joined the fight against the Black Arms in Shadow the Hedgehog,[55]Shadow the Hedgehog. developed a rivalry with Wave the Swallow in Sonic Riders,[56]Sonic Riders. helped stop Eggman Nega and the Ifrit in Sonic Rivals 2,[57]Sonic Rivals 2. and flew Sonic around the world during the restoration of the shattered planet in Sonic Unleashed.[58]Sonic Unleashed.
Personality[edit]

Tails is generally portrayed as a gentle, kind-hearted, loyal, and humble fox with a positive outlook on life.[59]Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) North American instruction booklet, pg. 20.[60]. Compared to Sonic, Tails is calmer, more thoughtful, and more at home working in his workshop or around machinery than chasing excitement for its own sake.[64]The History of Sonic the Hedgehog. Much of Tails’ character centers on his admiration for Sonic and his desire to become someone equally dependable. During his earlier adventures, he was content simply to follow Sonic and imitate the traits he found admirable, seeing himself as Sonic’s sidekick and younger partner.[39]Sega (2001). Sonic Adventure 2 instruction manual, pp. 8.[68]Sega (2001). Sonic Advance 2 instruction manual, pp. 4. Over time, however, he began to develop a stronger sense of self. A major turning point came during events of Sonic Adventure, when Tails realized that he could not rely on Sonic forever and had to find the courage to act on his own. After saving Station Square without Sonic’s help, he began to see that he could stand independently and support himself through determination and faith in his own abilities.[69]Sonic Adventure.

Despite this growth, Tails still struggles with insecurity and self-doubt at times.[63]Sonic Adventure Stylebook. . Chapter: MILES "TAILS" PROWER. p. 20. Tails is also notable for the contrast between his sweet nature and the quiet confidence he has gradually developed. Because he has spent so much time around Sonic, he has picked up some of Sonic’s confidence and sarcasm, and in later portrayals he is sometimes more outspoken about his intelligence or more willing to trade banter with his friends and insults with Eggman.[71]. TailsTube #3 (feat. Knuckles). YouTube. At the same time, he can still be naive, overly talkative, or prone to explaining things in technical language that frustrates those around him. Even when he makes mistakes, however, his intentions remain sincere, and he consistently acts out of loyalty and concern for others.
At his core, Tails is defined by compassion, trustworthiness, and a sincere desire to help. He has a pure heart and remains devoted to his friends no matter how dangerous the situation becomes.[73]Sonic the Hedgehog #1, “Fallout, Part 1”[74]Sonic the Hedgehog #50, “Battle for the Empire” Though young, he has repeatedly shown that he can be brave, resourceful, and dependable when it matters most. His character arc across the series is largely shaped by his attempt to balance two sides of himself: the loyal companion who looks up to Sonic, and the capable hero who wants to stand beside him rather than behind him.
Powers and abilities[edit]
Though Tails is not usually portrayed as the most physically aggressive member of Sonic’s circle, he is still a capable fighter in his own right. He has defeated numerous robots and machines created by Dr. Eggman, and has also overcome major enemies without Sonic’s help, including the Battle Kukku Empire and Witchcart‘s gang during his solo adventures.[75]Tails Adventure. [76]Tails' Skypatrol. He has likewise been able to contend with experienced fighters such as Sonic, Knuckles, Rouge, and Chaos under the right conditions.[77]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Tails’ most distinctive natural ability comes from his two tails. By spinning them rapidly, he can fly or hover like a helicopter, allowing him to cross large gaps, rise vertically, and carry other characters for limited distances.[78]Sora Ltd. (9 March 2008). Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Wii. Nintendo. Area/level: Trophy Hoard. “Tails – A friendly fox with two tails whose true name is Miles Prower. He can fly for a limited time by spinning his tails rapidly. To assist Sonic in staying one up on Dr. Eggman, Tails utilizes his knowledge of electrical engineering to create mechanical devices.”[79]Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit) He can also use his tails underwater as propellers and manipulate them in other ways for movement, including gliding and accelerating himself across the ground.[80]Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II Although this ability gives him exceptional mobility and enough speed to keep pace with Sonic in many situations, sustained flight tires him out and he cannot remain airborne indefinitely.[14]Sega (1999). Sonic Adventure instruction manual, pp. 20.[81]Sonic the Hedgehog #27, “All or Nothing, Part 2”
His twin tails are also powerful and versatile combat tools. Tails can use them to strike enemies directly, lash out like whips, spin through opponents, or perform a tail swipe against foes on the ground.[82]Sonic Adventure[83]Sega AM2 (10 July 1996). Sonic the Fighters. Arcade. Sega. They are strong enough to slice through metal and prehensile enough to function almost like extra limbs, letting him grab or manipulate objects with precision.[84]Sonic Lost World[85]Sonic the Hedgehog #13, “Calling Card” Tails can also use them for more advanced techniques in battle, such as spinning at high speed to become a living top or attacking from above with aerial maneuvers. In some games, he combines these movements with gadgets or support equipment to expand his options in combat.
Even without relying on flight, Tails is quite fast and athletic. Multiple portrayals show him keeping up with Sonic’s pace in ordinary movement or racing situations, even if Sonic is still generally regarded as the faster of the two.[86]Sonic Team (30 December 2003). Sonic Heroes. Xbox. Sega. Level/Area: Ending sequence (Last story).[87]Sonic Team (16 November 2010). Sonic Colors. Wii. Sega. Area/Level: Sweet Mountain. Tails has lifted both Sonic and Knuckles at once, moved extremely heavy weights, and survived atmospheric re-entry unharmed.[89]Sonic Team, Dimps (28 March 2003). Sonic Advance 2. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/Level: Ending sequence (Tails’ playthrough). He is an agile acrobat as well, capable of grinding on rails, performing aerial tricks, swimming, and piloting himself accurately through hazardous environments.

Like other major characters in the series, Tails is able to perform core techniques such as the Spin Attack, which allows him to curl into a ball for offense and movement. From this foundation, he can use related moves including the Spin Dash, Spin Jump, and in some portrayals the Homing Attack.[90]Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia Adept with both ground and aerial movement, he can transition quickly between mobility and offense, which makes him especially effective in fast-moving situations.
Tails has also demonstrated limited use of Chaos Emerald energy. By drawing on the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he can temporarily increase his power, and in some circumstances he has been able to use that energy to support transformations or empower others.[91]Sega AM2 (10 July 1996). Sonic the Fighters. Arcade. Sega. Area/Level: Death Egg’s Hangar (Tails’ story).[92]Sonic Team (6 February 2004). Sonic Heroes. PlayStation 2. Sega. Area/Level: Last Story. He can likewise harness Hyper-go-on from Wisps to access selected Color Power forms, including the Cyan Laser, Yellow Drill, and Indigo Asteroid, though these forms require a continued energy supply to be maintained.
Tails’ greatest strength, however, is his intellect. He is widely described as a mechanical prodigy or genius-level inventor whose skill rivals Eggman’s.[59]Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) North American instruction booklet, pg. 20.[65]Sonic Heroes (PlayStation 2) United States instruction booklet, pg. 8.[93]Sonic Rivals 2 (PlayStation Portable) United States instructions booklet, pg. 7.[94]. Mechanical creations, equipment, and vehicles

Tails is a mechanical prodigy whose inventions are among his most defining traits. Although he is not as prolific or destructive as Dr. Eggman, he has repeatedly built machines, vehicles, scanners, and support devices that have helped Sonic and his allies overcome major threats. His talent for engineering is often described as being on par with Eggman’s, even if Tails himself does not always recognize the full extent of his own ability.[59]Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) North American instruction booklet, pg. 20.[65]Sonic Heroes (PlayStation 2) United States instruction booklet, pg. 8.[93]Sonic Rivals 2 (PlayStation Portable) United States instructions booklet, pg. 7.[94]. He's as talented as Dr. Eggman, but has yet to discover the true potential of what he really can accomplish. Sonic has taken Tails under his wing and treats him like a younger brother. Tails wants to prove to Sonic that he's someone to be counted on. Besides his ability to fly using his twin tails, he has become an experienced pilot with the 'Tornado,' a plane that Sonic helped him build. Tails' fearless character and natural talent with mechanical devices come in handy to help Sonic out of danger.”
Among Tails’ best-known creations and modifications is the Tornado series. Although he did not originally build the first Tornado, he became closely associated with it after modifying and piloting it during Sonic’s adventures.[79]Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)[102]Sonic Adventure. . "Sonic: I'm just glad you're okay. What happened anyway? You're too good of a pilot to just crash like that. / Tails: That was a test run using a new prototype propulsion system. It's got a few bugs to iron out. / Sonic: Why not just use my plane, the Tornado?" He later developed more advanced models, including the Tornado 2, which was powered by Chaos Emerald energy and could transform into an attack configuration, and the Tornado 03, also known as the Tornado-1.[82]Sonic Adventure[103]Sonic Unleashed Tails’ skill as a pilot is extraordinary even by the standards of the series, and he has repeatedly used his planes to outmaneuver enemy aircraft and transport Sonic across dangerous territory.[6]Miles “Tails” Prower’s profile from Sonic Jam.[104]Sonic the Hedgehog #7, “Meet the New Boss”[105]Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2019, “Jet Set Tornado”
Another of Tails’ major vehicles is the Cyclone, a combat mech most prominently associated with Sonic Adventure 2. The Cyclone can function as a walker and weapons platform, but later material also describes versions of it that can transform into alternate forms, including a car, a monoplane, or a hover-equipped mech. It is fitted with assorted weapon systems such as missile launchers, a minigun, targeting systems, and a large laser cannon, allowing Tails to compensate for his smaller physical size in direct combat.[106]Sonic Adventure 2[107]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. In The Final Horizon, Tails was also shown recreating the Cyclone from memory while in a corrupted cyber state, demonstrating how deeply his technical knowledge is tied to his identity.[108]Sonic_Frontiers#TheFinal_Horizon

Tails has also built a wide range of specialty vehicles for travel and exploration. During his solo adventure on Cocoa Island, he used the Sea Tail, an underwater craft built to help him navigate and battle the Battle Kukku Empire.[109]Tails Adventures He has also created spacecraft and dimensional vessels such as the Lunar Fox, another rocket, and a spaceship, reflecting the breadth of his engineering skill across air, sea, land, and space travel.[110]Sonic the Fighters[111]Sonic the Hedgehog 4[112]Shadow the Hedgehog In racing contexts, Tails has driven or built several competitive vehicles as well, including the MTP-01 Whirlwind, MTP-02 Whirlwind S7, Whirlwind Sport, and other machines used in racing competitions and Grand Prix events.
Outside of vehicles, Tails has built numerous machines for analysis, communication, and support. These include the Emerald Detector, used to locate Chaos Emerald energy, and the Miles Electric, a multifunctional handheld device capable of translation, communication, and environmental scanning.[113]Sonic the Hedgehog 3[114]Sonic Riders[115]Sonic Colours[84]Sonic Lost World[103]Sonic Unleashed He has also created a fake Chaos Emerald with properties close to the real thing, a remarkable feat that highlights both his understanding of Chaos-based technology and his inventive problem-solving.[106]Sonic Adventure 2 Other creations include the Remote Robot, which performs reconnaissance work in places Tails himself cannot easily reach.[109]Tails Adventures
Tails’ equipment for combat and utility is similarly diverse. In games such as Sonic Battle, he employs devices like the Magic Hand, Energy Cannon, and Big Hand, all of which expand his offensive range and let him fight more creatively.[107]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. He also makes use of various bomb types, defensive gadgets, and support tools, including healing devices and deployable bots. On other occasions, he has used Dummy Rings as projectile weapons, the Boomering as a grappling device, and even wrenches and the Cyblaster as improvised or dedicated weapons while stranded on the Starfall Islands.[116]Tails’ Skypatrol[117]Sonic Heroes[118]Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)[119]Sonic Frontiers
Tails’ engineering skill also extends into modification and tuning rather than pure invention. He is well versed in Extreme Gear mechanics and has built or customized boards such as the Yellow Tail and Yellow Tail Turbo. Even Wave the Swallow, who is generally portrayed as the superior specialist in that field, has acknowledged the quality of Tails’ work.[100]Sonic Riders official website. Characters: Wave the Swallow. [120]Sonic Team, Sonic Team USA (17 March 2006). Sonic Riders. PlayStation 2. Sega. Area/Level: Red Canyon. “Wave: (Let’s see…) Huh? That Gear’s unusual. / Tails: Customized it myself. / Wave: Hmm… (This isn’t half bad for an amateur. Still, you can never be too careful.)” In the comics and other material, he is likewise shown improving vehicles and weaponry for his allies, reinforcing his role as the group’s primary inventor and mechanic.[121]Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #3, story one[105]Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2019, “Jet Set Tornado”
Transformations
Super Tails

By using all seven Chaos Emeralds, Tails can enter a Super State known as Super Tails. In this form, his natural abilities are greatly enhanced beyond their normal limits. He gains a major increase in power, can fly without relying on his twin tails, and becomes nearly invulnerable while the transformation lasts. As with other super forms in the series, the state consumes energy and typically requires Rings to be maintained.[91]Sega AM2 (10 July 1996). Sonic the Fighters. Arcade. Sega. Area/Level: Death Egg’s Hangar (Tails’ story).[92]Sonic Team (6 February 2004). Sonic Heroes. PlayStation 2. Sega. Area/Level: Last Story.
In some portrayals, Super Tails is additionally accompanied by a flock of empowered Flickies that circle around him and attack nearby enemies, most notably in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles.[122]Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles Later games have treated the form somewhat differently depending on the title. Sonic Mania depicts Tails transforming through the Chaos Emeralds, while Sonic Origins and Sonic Origins Plus handle the form in ways that reflect the changing presentation of his classic transformations. In Sonic Superstars, the form is instead referred to as Tails’ Super Powers.[123]Sonic Mania[124]Sonic Origins[125]Sonic Origins Plus[126]Sonic Superstars
Hyper Tails

By harnessing the power of all seven Super Emeralds, Tails can transform into Hyper Tails. This is a more powerful state than Super Tails, greatly amplifying all of his innate abilities beyond even his standard Super State. In addition to the overall increase in speed, strength, and mobility, Hyper Tails appears to grant him greater control over Chaos Emerald energy, allowing him to transfer that energy to nearby Animals, particularly Flickies, and temporarily grant them a Super State of their own.[122]Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles Hyper Tails is most closely associated with the classic era and has not been used as consistently in later games. While it appeared in some rereleases and collections, later versions have sometimes reverted that state back to Super Tails instead.[124]Sonic Origins[125]Sonic Origins Plus
Hyper Mode

A weaker variant of the super transformation, Hyper Mode allows Tails to draw on the power of the Chaos Emeralds for a brief period without fully entering a standard Super State. In this form, his speed and attack power increase significantly, though the transformation is more limited in duration and scale than Super Tails or Hyper Tails.[127]Sonic the Fighters
Color Powers
By harnessing different forms of Hyper-go-on from Wisps, Tails can access various Color Powers, temporarily transforming into specialized forms with unique abilities. These include forms such as the Cyan Laser, Yellow Drill, and Indigo Asteroid, each suited to different forms of movement, combat, or traversal. Like other users of Color Powers, Tails must maintain a supply of Hyper-go-on in order to sustain these transformations.[128]Sonic Colors
Weaknesses
Tails has several personal and practical weaknesses despite his many strengths. One of his more notable flaws is that he can be overly talkative or speak without thinking, which has occasionally caused serious problems. During the Space Colony ARK incident, for example, he inadvertently revealed to Eggman that the Chaos Emerald in Sonic’s possession was a fake, undermining the heroes’ plan.[129]Sonic Team USA (23 June 2001). Sonic Adventure 2. Dreamcast. Sega. Cutscene: Sonic in Trouble (Hero story). “Eggman: You thought you could trick me with that fake Emerald, didn’t you? / Tails: So… how did you know it wasn’t the real one? / Sonic: Tails! / Eggman: Because you just told me, fox boy!”
Although Tails is brave when it matters most, he is also known to have several fears. Various sources describe him as being afraid of thunder,[6]Miles “Tails” Prower’s profile from Sonic Jam. ghosts,[130]. Act:002 オバケのお礼参り. Sonic Channel. and even great heights in spite of his ability to fly.[131]Sonic Adventure. . "Tails: It's pretty high... My legs are shaking!" When placed under severe pressure or stress, he can become nervous or fearful, which may briefly leave him unable to respond effectively to the situation at hand.
His ability to fly using his twin tails also comes with clear physical limits. While Tails can stay airborne for impressive stretches and even carry others, doing so requires considerable effort and stamina. Extended flight can exhaust him, especially if he is lifting someone or carrying extra weight, and overusing this ability can leave him temporarily unable to fly again.[81]Sonic the Hedgehog #27, “All or Nothing, Part 2” He can likewise struggle against opponents who are significantly faster than he is, particularly in direct confrontations where he cannot rely on preparation, gadgets, or aerial mobility.[121]Sonic the Hedgehog: Imposter Syndrome #3, story one

Another recurring weakness is Tails’ lack of confidence. Even after proving himself in major crises, he has periodically fallen back into self-doubt, especially when he feels overshadowed, unable to protect his friends, or overly dependent on Sonic. This insecurity became especially pronounced after the events of Sonic Forces and remained an important part of his characterization in Sonic Frontiers, where he questioned whether he had become a burden instead of a dependable partner. Even so, he has repeatedly shown the will to overcome these feelings and become more self-reliant.[71]. TailsTube #3 (feat. Knuckles). YouTube. [72]Sonic Frontiers.
Some portrayals also present Tails as easily flustered around girls or women, which can make him more susceptible to embarrassment or manipulation in certain situations. Though usually played lightly, this trait is occasionally treated as another sign of his youth and emotional inexperience.

Localization differences
In some early Western game localizations, elements of Tails’ backstory were altered from the Japanese material. Rather than being bullied for his two tails, he was sometimes described as being admired for them, and his bond with Sonic was framed in a more simplified, Westernized origin story in which he had long idolized Sonic and even inadvertently discovered the Spin Dash while trying to imitate him. These changes reflected broader differences in how early Sonic stories were adapted outside Japan.
Television and animation

Tails appears in most major animated adaptations of the franchise, though his role and background vary by continuity. In Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, he is portrayed as an orphan whom Sonic finds and takes in, and the two are rarely separated. In Sonic the Hedgehog, he is a younger survivor of Robotnik’s conquest who lives with the Freedom Fighters and is often kept away from more dangerous missions because of his age. The 1996 Sonic the Hedgehog OVA stays closer to the game version, presenting him as a close friend of Sonic and a gifted electronics expert, though with some small differences such as lacking his usual ability to swim.
Sonic X also follows Tails’ game counterpart relatively closely, emphasizing his intelligence, his attachment to the Tornado 2, and his friendship with Chuck Thorndyke. In that series, he helps develop the Tornado-X and later builds the Blue Typhoon for the heroes’ space journey. His bond with Cosmo becomes one of the most significant parts of his role in the final season. By contrast, the Sonic Boom continuity reimagines him within a separate spin-off setting, where he remains a main character across the television series, comics, and games but with a distinct redesign and comedic tone. In Sonic Prime, Tails is once again portrayed as Sonic’s closest companion and technical expert, but the series also introduces alternate counterparts created by the shattering of the Paradox Prism. These include Tails Nine from New Yoke City, Mangey Tails from Boscage Maze, and Sails Tails from No Place. The series places unusual emphasis on how Tails might have developed under very different circumstances, especially through Nine, whose isolation and bitterness contrast sharply with the main version of the character.
Comics

Tails has had a major presence in comic adaptations of the franchise. In the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog series, he was reworked into the continuity established by the television cartoon while retaining more of his game relationship with Sonic. He was born to Amadeus and Rosemary Prower, raised in Knothole, and eventually reunited with his parents after learning they had survived Robotnik’s takeover. This version of Tails also gained several transformation-based storylines unique to Archie, including Turbo Tails and Titan Tails, which gave him a much larger mythic role in that continuity.
In Sonic the Comic, Tails is similarly distinct from his game counterpart. Rather than originating on Mobius, he arrives there through a space warp and becomes Sonic’s sidekick after meeting him. Over time, he grows beyond the role of a comic-relief companion and becomes a hero in his own right, especially in stories involving the Nameless Zone, where he is mistakenly believed to be a great champion and repeatedly ends up defending his homeland in armor with a sword.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing, Tails’ background initially follows the games and then continues forward from the aftermath of Sonic Forces. He helps defend towns from rogue Badniks, takes part in the battle against Neo Metal Sonic on Angel Island, researches the Metal Virus in an attempt to stop it, and later becomes involved in storylines centered on Belle and Dr. Starline. He also appears in crossover material such as DC X Sonic the Hedgehog, where he partners with Cyborg during the heroes’ conflict with Darkseid.
Film and streaming adaptations

Tails appears in the Paramount Sonic the Hedgehog film series as an anthropomorphic fox from another world who grows up admiring Sonic from afar. He first appears in a mid-credits scene in the first film, arriving on Earth in search of Sonic. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he takes on a major role by warning Sonic that Knuckles is hunting him and then joining him in the search for the Master Emerald. After helping defeat Dr. Robotnik, he remains on Earth with Sonic, Knuckles, and the Wachowskis. He later makes an appearance in the Knuckles streaming series and returns in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as the team’s primary technical support and gadget specialist.
Reception[edit]
Tails has generally received positive reception and is widely regarded as one of the most recognizable characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He was awarded “Best New Character” in Electronic Gaming Monthly‘s 1992 video game awards, which praised both his appeal and his usefulness in gameplay.[19]Electronic Gaming Monthly's Buyer's Guide. p. 20 He has also ranked highly in official and fan-oriented popularity polls. According to official polls, Tails is among the franchise’s most popular characters, commonly ranking behind only Sonic and Shadow.[132]. Official Popularity Poll results. Sega. [133]Official Popularity Poll results. sonic.sega.jp. . Archived version
A number of publications have highlighted Tails as one of gaming’s best-known sidekicks. Official Nintendo Magazine listed him as the second-best Sonic character,[134]Nintendo Feature: The best and worst Sonic characters. Official Nintendo Magazine. while other outlets have ranked him highly in sidekick-focused features and retrospectives. Video game journalists have often pointed to his importance to the identity of the series, especially in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where his presence helped define Sonic’s supporting cast and expanded the game’s appeal through cooperative play.[135]. 15 Greatest Moments in Sonic the Hedgehog History. Prima Games. . Archived version The Sonic Jam Official Guide also remarked that Tails’ charm appealed strongly to many fans and contrasted effectively with Sonic’s image.[136]ソニックジャム オフィシャルガイド. SoftBank. . . pp. 101–102. ISBN 978-4797303377
At the same time, reception to Tails has not been entirely uniform. Some critics have been less favorable toward later portrayals of the character, particularly when he was written as more talkative or overly technical. A 1998 Electronic Gaming Monthly editorial compared him unfavorably to Scrappy-Doo and criticized his design and overall presence.[137]Tails is the Scrappy Doo of Gaming. Electronic Gaming Monthly. Ziff Davis. . Issue 112. p. 6 GamesRadar+ later ranked him among the “cutesy characters” they found irritating, arguing that he had shifted from a likable quiet sidekick into a more annoying “tech nerd” in some later games.[138]Top 7... Cutesy Characters We Want to Beat the Crap Out of. GamesRadar+. . Archived version Even so, Tails has remained one of the franchise’s most enduring and broadly popular characters, and his status as Sonic’s primary companion has continued across games, comics, animation, and film.
