IDW has released its full May 2026 solicitations, and for Sonic readers, one issue immediately stands out. Sonic the Hedgehog #87 launches a brand-new arc in the Road to 100 era and places the Master Emerald at the center of a developing crisis.
According to the official solicitation, the issue opens with Chaos Emeralds mysteriously vanishing around the world. Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, and Miles “Tails” Prower travel to Angel Island to warn Knuckles the Echidna, but the situation spirals when the island is swallowed by a powerful storm that splits the team apart.
The story sets up a two-front survival scenario. Sonic and Amy become trapped underground, facing opponents that feel unsettlingly familiar, while Knuckles and Tails battle through the chaos on the surface. At the center of the conflict is a mysterious cloaked figure with their own designs on the Master Emerald, signaling a threat that could extend beyond a single issue.

Attack on the Master Emerald!
With all of the Chaos Emeralds in the world going missing, Sonic, Amy, and Tails travel to Angel Island to warn Knuckles that the Master Emerald is in danger. Although the four friends together are near-unstoppable, everything changes when Angel Island passes beneath a powerful storm, separating the team!
Trapped underground, Amy and Sonic find themselves facing eerily familiar opponents, while on the surface Knuckles and Tails are left to weather the raging storm. But the tempest isn’t the only danger on the island—in the midst of the chaos and confusion, a shrouded figure has arrived with their own plans for the Master Emerald…
A new arc on the Road to 100 starts here!
Sonic the Hedgehog #87 is scheduled for release in May 2026. The 32-page issue will retail for $4.99 and lists Iasmin Omar Ata and Evan Stanley on story, Min Ho Kim on art, and a main cover by Iasmin Omar Ata. Variant covers include a Kris Dobbins edition and a 1:15 incentive variant by Nathalie Fourdraine.
May also brings a major collected release for fans looking to catch up. Sonic the Hedgehog: The IDW Collection, Vol. 6 is an oversized 296-page hardcover priced at $59.99. The volume collects issues #51–56, the 2022 Annual, the 2022 Free Comic Book Day story, and the full Scrapnik Island miniseries, offering a substantial snapshot of the modern era.

Oversize hardcover editions of IDW’s celebrated Sonic the Hedgehog comics, including the ongoing series, annuals, and miniseries, all presented in recommended reading order!
Race into these stories from across Sonic’s world, from frightful foes to old ghosts to mismatched pairs! Speaking of mismatched pairs, who is Surge, beyond Sonic’s evil counterpart? These two speedsters just can’t seem to stop fighting, all of which comes to a head in Central City![1]
Following a clash with Dr. Starline, an evolved Surge is free and wreaking destruction on all technology in her path—and only Sonic can stop her. The two must battle it out, but who will win? And will forces from the past come back to haunt them? In another story of ghosts of the past, Sonic and Tails crash on the deserted Scrapnik Island and must battle their way past tech hardwired to destroy them. However, some of these robots are different…and more personal.
Collects issues #51–56 from volume 14 (Overpowered) of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the 2022 Annual, Sonic the Hedgehog 2022 Free Comic Book Day and the Scrapnik Island four-issue miniseries.
With the Road to 100 already building momentum, the Angel Island setup in #87 reads like a deliberate escalation. Missing Chaos Emeralds, a storm isolating the heroes, and a new figure targeting the Master Emerald suggest the kind of opening move that could ripple across multiple arcs as the series approaches its milestone issue.
