The first issue of Super Sonic Monthly is here, giving fans an exclusive look behind the scenes of IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comics. This new monthly feature from AIPT dives into the creative process behind Sonic’s ongoing adventures, with interviews, reader questions, and early looks at upcoming issues.
The debut edition celebrates the Blue Blur’s busy month across multiple releases, including Sonic the Hedgehog #81, which launches a brand-new mystery arc, and The Chaotix 30th Anniversary Special, honoring thirty years of the detective trio. Readers can also pick up Sonic the Hedgehog: On the Go, Vol. 1, a perfect entry point for newcomers or anyone wanting Sonic stories on the move.
The feature includes exclusive page previews from Sonic the Hedgehog #82, offering a first look at the follow-up to issue #81’s cliffhanger.

The editorial Q&A covers a wide range of fan questions, from Knuckles’ next appearance and the possibility of more Classic Era comics to potential mini-series and spin-offs. The team confirmed that Knuckles will return soon, teasing that an arc featuring him is already in development. They also hinted that something set in the Classic timeline could arrive as early as 2026, while suggesting that a new spin-off might be centered around Sage, who joins the comic continuity in issue #84.

When asked about character arcs, the editors reassured fans that Surge and Kitsunami will return in future stories following their appearances in issue #78. Whisper’s past with the Diamond Cutters will not be revisited soon, as her current story focuses on healing and moving forward.

The team explained that not every pitch makes it into publication due to timing or focus, but praised the Sonic creative staff for their passion and professionalism. They also shared some of their dream pairings, such as a story where Shadow and Amy team up, describing it as a mix of intensity and heart.
When asked about standout issues, the editors mentioned several fan-favorite storylines, including the emotional moments in issues #50 and #51 and the chaos of the Phantom Riders arc starting with issue #69. They added that they hope to experiment with more playful storytelling concepts in the future, such as a “choose-your-own-adventure” comic, once the Road to 100 arc concludes.
The feature also touches on design insights, revealing that the new character Lunar, introduced in issue #81, began as a single-paragraph idea before being refined into a sugar glider to match the circus-themed storyline. Early drafts considered making the character a squirrel or monkey before settling on a design that emphasized agility and expressiveness.
As the Road to 100 continues, the editors noted that Super Sonic and other powered-up forms are used sparingly so they remain impactful when they do appear. Fans can look forward to future moments when Sonic may once again harness the Chaos Emeralds if the story calls for it.
The first Super Sonic Monthly captures everything Sonic fans love — creative insight, passion, and thoughtful teases about what’s ahead. Between the interviews, returning characters, and new character details, there’s plenty for readers to look forward to.
