Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is almost here, and players diving into early access have already uncovered one of its most entertaining surprises: the new rival mechanic. Each race still features a full roster of 12 drivers, but one is randomly chosen as your rival, sparking unique pre-race dialogue and pushing you harder on the track.
What makes this feature stand out is the writing. The rival banter isn’t just filler—it’s sharp, funny, and often ruthless, filled with callbacks and character-specific digs that give every racer a chance to shine.
Take E-123 Omega, for example. When matched against Vector the Crocodile, he fires off a brutal line:
Vector’s unlucky love life comes up more than once, too. If he goes up against Cream, she teases that he might have better luck with her mum if he lets her win.
Other exchanges are just as cutting. Big the Cat politely asks Shadow to go fishing, only to get a cold, one-word reply: “No.” Jet the Hawk tears into almost everyone, mocking Big for not knowing who he is and belittling Amy as the “fourth wheel” to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Sage takes it even further, declaring her outright superiority and dismissing Charmy’s cheerful attitude as nothing more than “psychological warfare.”
Not all of it is mean-spirited, though. Silver puts his own spin on the mechanic by delivering cryptic glimpses of the future, leaving his rivals scratching their heads instead of licking their wounds.
With such a huge roster, the rival system creates countless combinations, and fans are already trading clips of their favorite burns online. It’s a feature that adds humor, depth, and personality to the races, ensuring that every matchup feels unique.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds officially launches on September 25, with Digital Deluxe Edition owners gaining early access today.
