The Sonic Rush games, originally released for the Nintendo DS in the mid-2000s, are being revived in an ambitious new fan project. A team of dedicated developers has announced Sonic Rush Rerun, a “definitive” PC remaster that combines the two original titles into a single package with added content and long-requested fixes.

According to the developers, the goal is to take the highlights of the Sonic Rush formula and refine them further. “We want to make a definitive version of Sonic Rush for PC with additional content and to fix the problems with the original game,” the team explained in their announcement. For many fans, Sonic Colors on the Nintendo DS is considered a spiritual successor to the Rush series, and the developers are leaning into that “trilogy” idea as part of the project’s identity.

The project lead, MelohRush, first entered the Sonic community through fan animations and cites Sonic Frontiers as a key inspiration. He is joined by lead programmer Crimznraze, lead modeller Ozark, and a large team of artists, composers, designers, and voice actors working together to bring the project to life. Some of the game’s soundtrack has already been previewed on YouTube.

Sonic Rush Rerun does not currently have a release date. Like all fan games, its future depends on SEGA’s stance regarding copyright, though the company has historically been more lenient than most major publishers. In some cases, SEGA has even embraced community talent, with Sonic Mania being the most famous example.

For now, fans of Sonic’s high-speed, dual-screen adventures can look forward to seeing how this “definitive” Rush experience takes shape on PC.

Update – September 9, 2025:
Following the announcement, the Sonic Rush Rerun team has issued a clarification regarding the scope of the project. While the remake will include elements inspired by Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic Colors DS, the project itself is focused solely on remaking the original Sonic Rush.

The team explained that earlier confusion came from wording in the announcement trailer, which has since been revised. They added that while remaking additional games was considered, the decision was made to avoid scope creep and concentrate on delivering a definitive version of the first title.

A demo of the game will also be made available to download during this year’s Sonic Amature Games Expo which will run from September 19th through September 26th 2025.
