The question of how Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds would handle voicework for its crossover roster has been a hot topic since the game’s reveal earlier this year. While SEGA previously confirmed that only the core cast of 24 Sonic characters will feature full rival dialogue, guest characters from the Season Pass like SpongeBob and Pac-Man are not expected to have voices.

It now appears that some SEGA characters will still receive voicework, starting with Hatsune Miku.

In a now-deleted tweet, Famitsu briefly posted footage of Hatsune Miku in CrossWorlds, where she could be clearly heard speaking Japanese. The tweet was quickly removed, suggesting it was shared ahead of schedule, but not before we captured and reposted the footage.

Later on, other gaming outlets also shared new footage from this year’s Gamescom showing more of the vocaloid’s voice lines, including after finishing a race, during her victory results screen, and on the character select screen:

As a vocaloid, Hatsune Miku’s voice is synthesized, which means SEGA does not need to bring in an actor for recording sessions. This makes her a straightforward character to give dialogue to and raises the possibility that other SEGA guest characters may also receive lines.

Whether this will extend to characters like Joker, who is set to appear in the upcoming network test, remains to be seen. For now, Miku stands out as the first confirmed non-Sonic character to speak in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
