Knuckles!
Knuckles is often depicted with a serious expression, whether he’s fighting or serving as the guardian of the Master Emerald. Illustrations where he’s casually greeting someone, like this one, are quite rare.
So, who is he looking at?
It probably isn’t Sonic. Sonic tends to be less warm and more likely to throw a sarcastic joke. It’s unlikely that he’s greeting Tails or Amy in such a casual manner either…
Perhaps he’s greeting the familiar Chao on Angel Island. In the prequel animation for Sonic Frontiers, Knuckles was very kind to many familiar Chao. It’s possible that even the usually gruff Knuckles enjoys spending time with Chao and sharing his favorite fruits with them. Maybe in this illustration, Knuckles has acquired a special treat and is inviting everyone to join him… I would love to join in!
