Cream the Rabbit, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

Cream the Rabbit (クリーム・ザ・ラビット, Kurīmu za Rabitto) is a recurring character in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. An anthropomorphic rabbit and the daughter of Vanilla the Rabbit, she is almost always accompanied by her pet Chao Cheese. She first appeared as hidden artwork in Sonic Mega Collection (2002) and made her playable debut in Sonic Advance 2. Cream can fly short distances by flapping her large ears.

Polite, well-mannered, and pure-hearted—though sometimes shy and naive—Cream is curious, courageous, and quick to help others. After a chance encounter with Sonic when Doctor Eggman kidnapped her mother, she began joining Sonic and friends on their adventures. Despite her young age, she stands up for herself and her companions and is growing into a hero in her own right, much like her best friend Amy Rose.

Concept and Creation

Cream went through several early concept designs, including forms as a squirrel, cat, red panda, jerboa, tanuki, and raccoon. Some of these ideas were later reworked into other characters like Marine the Raccoon and Sticks the Badger. Her name is a pun on foods such as “vanilla cream” and “cream cheese,” which highlights her connection to Vanilla the Rabbit and her Chao companion Cheese.

Sonic Team originally created Cream for Sonic Heroes, intending her to be the Fly Type member of Team Rose. However, since Sonic Advance 2 was being developed in parallel, the team introduced her there first in December 2002 to familiarize players with the character ahead of Heroes’ release. This also meant she debuted in the games before appearing on television in Sonic X, where she was featured from the very first episode.

According to Sega, Cream was designed as a beginner-friendly character. Rather than attacking enemies directly, she uses the Chao Attack so as not to compromise her image as a sweet and polite girl.

Voice

Since her debut, Cream has been voiced in Japanese by Sayaka Aoki. In English, she was first voiced by Sarah Wulfeck in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Advance 3, followed by Rebecca Honig from Shadow the Hedgehog (video game) through Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity. Michelle Ruff has voiced her from Sonic Free Riders onward.
