Lee Cocker, who has been involved in the development of every entry in the popular Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games minigame collection series, recently announced on his socials that the franchise has come to an end. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was be the last entry in the series. The reason for this is the International Olympic Committee’s decision not to renew the video game license with SEGA, opting instead for a new partner and focusing on eSports.
While it’s sad to see the franchise end, this might be a good opportunity to explore what other genres these iconic characters could venture into outside of sports and fighting games.
