Humans (人間, Ningen^?) are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They share the planet with other sapient creatures, but are notably the most populated beings on Earth.

Description

Anatomy

Humans' anatomy is very similar to their real-life counterparts, although various depictions of them often stylize them as either realistic, semi-realistic, anime-like or even cartoony with exaggerated features. Examples of humans with exaggerated features include Professor Pickle, whose eyebrows cover his eyes; Witchcart, who has a long, pointy nose; and Dr. Eggman, with his broad shoulders and spindly arms, round curves and noodle legs.

Humans' skin tones can fall into multiple shades of colors, such as peach or brown. Their hair colors can also differ, though it is rare to find a human with hair that is not brown, blonde, black, or white, unlike most anthropomorphic animals. In terms of body shape, humans are much more diverse than anthropomorphic animals, as they can range greatly between different individuals.

Furthermore, they are not shown to be capable of breathing in the vacuum of outer space as their neighboring anthropomorphic natives, like Sonic and Tails.

Humans are, for the most part, a very diverse species. Due to the amount of civilizations they have formed, humans follow different cultures,^[2] which include a variety of traditions, beliefs, and languages; some of which have endured for generations and are still practiced today.^[3]^[4] This has allowed them to design and build impressive structures over time that are widely regarded as masterpieces in the current era.^[5]^[6] Despite the craziness and disasters that happen around them though, humans just want to get on with their lives, as they do not like to concern themselves with trivial matters, like the time of awakening. While humans have an infamous history of causing many horrific incidents, and there are still many selfish individuals out there, it is attested that most of them are good-hearted and only want to live their lives.^[1]^[7]

They are a noticeably expansive species on Earth. Its settlements are divided by a plethora of countries, each of which feature their own cultures and peoples.^[2] Politically, these countries may have different forms of government, including republics, monarchies and dictatorships. Humans are also capable of living in varied environments throughout the planet, almost making them a cosmopolitan species. These include rainforest, deserts and frozen areas. This does not mean that their populations are uniformly distributed across earth, however, as some areas might hold more or less inhabitants than others, or not even hold any settlements at all. Also, humans prefer to live in the planet's continents; most islands and other areas are, on the other hand, populated by anthropomorphic animals or other species entirely.^[2] Lastly, they have very limited presence in outer space, aside from the few space stations by the Robotnik family.

Gaia Temple guardians

Humans are the only known species throughout generations to be Gaia Temple guardians that guard the Gaia Temples across planet Earth for when the day Time of awakening occurs. This is interesting, as over the millions and millions of years of the conflict between Light Gaia and Dark Gaia on earth, Chip uses the Gaia Temples to combat Dark Gaia. Whether humans had always been the guardians over the temples is unknown, as Dr. Eggman doesn't even mention humans when claiming the otherworldly Ancients are older than any of the other civilizations known to him.^[8] However, the guardians have mysterious and unique abilities that allow only them to assemble Planet Tablets to access the Gaia Gates. It is quite possible the humans as a species had been the temple guardians over the millenniums but their varied cultures would likely be younger than the Knuckles Clan.

Powers and abilities

Certain individuals among humanity have demonstrated exceptional intelligence and affinity for technology. This is evidenced by the complex machinery and inventions found in their cities, the different advanced mechs used by various parties, and their massive space stations orbiting the planet.

Fundamentally, humans have no special powers. Only a very small percentage of them have demonstrated a small degree of supernatural abilities. For example, Princess Elise the Third has demonstrated the power of visions and the ability to create an energy field by combining her powers with others (although this may simply be due to her having Iblis sealed within her) and Witchcart has demonstrated the ability to fire energy blasts and claimed that she can turn people into crystals. Certain distinct individuals possess the ability to sense and communicate with spirits. The Duke of Soleanna has also demonstrated the ability to harness Chaos Emerald energy despite seemingly being a normal human.

Robotnik

The Robotnik family, such as Gerald Robotnik, are able to achieve incredible feats above their own species capabilities using their gifted intelligence that seems to run through the bloodline.

Dr. Eggman is arguably the most superhuman of any human, exemplified by not only his feats of intelligence and adaptability, but surprising physical strength and speed too, on various occasions. The doctor's combat capabilities vastly outpaces other humans as he is Sonic the Hedgehog's main combative opponent in one-on-one fights on global/universe settings utilizing self-made, science fiction tools. Additionally, he has the ability and experience to manipulate governments, gods, and mystical energies by using various means to give himself an advantage, the skill to make artificial intelligence so advance he is practically creating life,^[9] and the superhuman mental fortitude that doesn't allow any defeat to slow him down.

Animation

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog

In the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series, humans live on Mobius along with anthropomorphic animals and many other exotic species. Some are depicted with realistic proportions while others are more cartoonish in appearance, such as with Dr. Ivo Robotnik's family, whose members feature fat, tall bodies and, sometimes, a rugged, orange mustache.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog television series, humans live on Mobius along with anthropomorphic animals.

Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie

In Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, humans with both long pointy and normal ears live on Planet Freedom. They appear to have formed a society with a White House at its center, lead by a president. Most humans on Planet Freedom live on floating islands in the Land of the Sky, where they co-exist alongside anthropomorphic animals. Dr. Robotnik is the only known living being who resides in the Land of Darkness.

The term "human" is never used in this media.

Sonic Underground

In the Sonic Underground television series, at least one other human is shown residing on Mobius in addition to Dr. Robotnik.^[10]

Sonic X

In the Sonic X anime series, humans reside on Earth, a parallel planet to Sonic's home world. In this media, humans are even more similar to their real-life counterparts than in the games, as their technology was almost nothing special until they studied the otherworldly E-Series robots. However, one man, Gerald Robotnik, did not fit this stereotype, as he was able to create things such as the Eclipse Cannon and even Shadow, although there are some hints that he may have had contact with Sonic's world at some point, given his knowledge of the Chaos Emeralds.^[11]^[12]

A different group of humans also exist within Sonic's home universe, who appears to be several times more technologically advanced than even those on Sonic's planet, who are in turn more technologically advanced than the humans on Earth.^[13]^[14]

Sonic Boom

Despite being the only human to appear throughout the Sonic Boom television series, Dr. Eggman makes infrequent references to both of his parents,^[15]^[16] as well as an unnamed great-aunt,^[17] suggesting that there could be other humans.

Books and comics

Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic

In the Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic promotional manga, Sonic has a group of humans called Sonic's Bodyguard Platoon, consisting of five human girls with animal features and playboy bunny-like outfits. Appearing at the concert for Sonic's Band, they are among the audience of animals from the games, acting as enthusiastic fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog (manga)

In the Sonic the Hedgehog serialized manga published by Shogakukan, humans live on Earth alongside anthropomorphic animals. Aside from Dr. Eggman, very few humans appear and are implied to be an uncommon sight for the residents of Hedgehog Town, although those who live there are aware of human celebrities and own knick-knacks and toys modeled after humans.

Archie Comics

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, humans^[18]^[19] are said to be the ancestors of Overlanders, a species of devolved humanoids. Several thousand years ago, humans used to live on Mobius (back when the planet was still called "Earth") as the planet's dominant species. However, due to their actions towards the Xorda ambassador, they antagonized the Xorda, causing them to drop Gene Bombs on the planet, eventually leading to the mutation of most humans into Overlanders and the animal kingdom into mobians. However, some humans survived and lived in isolation in Station Square for thousands of years.^[18]^[20] As such, humanity still maintains a presence on Mobius, albeit in much fewer numbers.

After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, humans became regular inhabitants of Sonic's World, with little to no distinct differences between their game counterparts.

Sonic the Comic

In the Sonic the Comic series and its spin-offs published by Fleetway Editions, most humans live on Earth, a planet parallel to Mobius. However, apart from Dr. Robotnik, some other individuals are also shown to reside on Mobius.
