The Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has reached a monumental milestone, surpassing $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings. Paramount Pictures’ adaptation of the iconic Sega video game series has captivated audiences since the first film’s release in February 2020, followed by a successful sequel in April 2022. Together, the first two films grossed a combined $725.2 million globally. The third installment, which debuted in December 2024, has already added over $312 million to the total, pushing the franchise’s earnings to an impressive $1.037 billion.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, all three movies have resonated with fans and critics alike. The latest installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, received an “A” CinemaScore and franchise-best ratings of 86% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% Verified Hot Popcornmeter. The film opened at No. 1 domestically and achieved the series’ largest international opening, with its overseas box office performance surpassing its predecessors.

The success of the franchise extends beyond the big screen. Knuckles, a spinoff series that premiered on Paramount+ in April 2024, contributed significantly, garnering over 11 million global viewing hours in its first 28 days and becoming the platform’s most-watched Kids & Family content.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 brought back its beloved cast, including Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz as Sonic, and Idris Elba as Knuckles, along with newcomers like Krysten Ritter and Keanu Reeves. With a screenplay by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, and a production team led by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno, the franchise continues to deliver action-packed stories that fans adore.

The film’s success has paved the way for future projects, with Paramount confirming development on Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The Sonic cinematic universe is set to expand further, promising more high-speed adventures.

Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher shared their gratitude:

We are so overjoyed with the amazing response to the Sonic the Hedgehog films. We make these movies for the fans; their passion, support, and love drive us every day to create the fast, funny, and action-packed stories that define the Sonic Universe.

Paramount Pictures President & CEO Brian Robbins added:
