Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020)

Not to be confused with Sonic at the Olympic Games or Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Sonic at the Olympic Games (ソニック AT 東京2020オリンピック Sonikku de Tōkyō Nisen-Nijū Orinpikku?, lit. "Sonic AT Tokyo 2020 Olympics"), also known as Sonic at the Olympic Games - Tokyo 2020,[2] is a mobile sports game starring Sonic the Hedgehog and other characters from the series at the 2020 Summer Olympics.[3] The game was released on iOS, iPadOS, and Android devices on 7 May 2020.

On 21 October 2021, it was announced that services for the game would be terminated on 15 December 2021.[4] An offline version of the game was then announced and released on 20 January 2022.[5][6] The game was delisted and discontinued from all app stores on 30 June 2024.[7]

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Sonic at the Olympic Games features similar gameplay to its predecessors, Sonic at the Olympic Games and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games.

There are a total of sixteen playable characters in Sonic at the Olympic Games. Initially, only Sonic is playable, but the others become unlocked as the player progresses through the Story Mode. Similar to the 3DS versions of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, each character is exclusive to certain events. However, Sonic is playable in all events. While individual stats were not present in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, each character has their own sets of stats for each event. Each character also has SP depending which events they are available on. While Sonic gets these for free by playing an event for first time during story, Specials for other characters must be bought by using spirits and training points.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The roster is the same as Team Sonic's roster in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
    • This is notably the first Mario & Sonic-related game to feature "Guest" characters in more than one event (discounting the Duel Events in the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games), as Eggman Nega is playable in Javelin Throw, Badminton, and Archery, while Rouge is playable in Trampoline and Sport Climbing.
  • One piece of music used for loading screens in the game is a remix of the main theme for Sonic Dash.
  • Unlike Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the characters do not wear unique outfits, except for Amy and Blaze.
    • Despite this, Amy is still wearing her original outfit in the main artwork of the game.
  • Unlike its Nintendo Switch counterpart, which uses Sonic's voice clips from the Sonic Boom series, Sonic's voice clips are taken from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, which in turn are taken from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Sonic Generations, and Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
  • In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Jet's victory poses cannot be seen due to being exclusive to a team event (where characters simply wave). In this game, however, right before racing against Jet in Story Mode, Jet does an animation when the other bosses use their 1st place animations (except Eggman Nega, who uses his 2nd/3rd place animation instead), effectively allowing his 1st place animation to be seen in game.
    • This animation is also seen in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
  • While they appear in this game, the 200m, 400m, Hammer Throw, Trampoline, and BMX do not appear as events in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
    • 400m Hurdles, Long Jump, and Shooting do appear in the game, but as Tokyo 1964 events rather than Tokyo 2020 events. Diving is also a Tokyo 1964 event, albeit using the 10m Platform discipline instead of the 3m Springboard.
  • Like it's corresponding Mario & Sonic counterpart, Patrick Seitz's name is misspelled in the credits as "Patrcik Seitz". Additionally, Matthew Mercer and Bryce Papenbrook's names are misspelled as "Mattew Mercer" and "Bryce Pappenbrook" respectively.
  • After he and Zavok lose in Story Mode, Zazz says, "Dammit! How did he beat us?" This makes this the fourth Sonic game to have swearing, the first three being Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Runners, and Team Sonic Racing.
  • This was the first Sonic game to be released in the 2020's.
