Super Sonic (スーパーソニック[1] Sūpā Sonikku?) is a transformation that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the Super State of Sonic the Hedgehog, achieved by harnessing the positive power of the seven Chaos Emeralds.[2] As his ultimate form,[3] Super Sonic has been by far Sonic's most common transformation since the West Side Island incident and would become the hedgehog's greatest trump card against his adversaries in the climaxes of later adventures, providing him with both the power and abilities to save the world on numerous occasions.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

When transformed into Super Sonic, Sonic's proportions remain unchanged for the most part, and he still wears the same gloves and shoes he normally wears. Various changes include his blue fur becoming golden yellow in color, his green pupils turning red, his peach skin gaining a slightly golden hue, and the quills on his head pointing upwards. He also possesses a golden aura that varies in size and can be anything from smooth to flame-like in shape. This aura sometimes displays either faint sparkles or electrical sparks.

Super Sonic's original design has a round torso and black pupils, with his back quills upturned like those on his head, retaining their normal position later on, and lime colored pupils. Super Sonic's current design, just like Sonic himself, has become taller, with a thinner torso and red eyes.

Occasionally, Super Sonic's quill arrangement changes, resembling Shadow's more, with four quills pointing upward and the other two downwards.

In the Final Horizon update of Sonic Frontiers, Sonic uses cyber corruption to evolve his Super Sonic form further. In his first state, Super Sonic remains largely physically unchanged, but his golden aura is accompanied by a secondary crimson-red aura, his body gains a crimson outline and his eyes change to cyan blue. When Super Sonic pushes the form to its utmost limits, he allows the cyber corruption to fully subsume him, causing him to become completely black with a cyan outline and his auras being replaced by glitchy cyan electric sparks. Super Sonic also undergoes a marked physical alteration in this state, with his eyes becoming grey with black rings and his teeth becoming sharpened.

Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]

Super Sonic is easily one of the most powerful beings in the Sonic series, having defeated titanic robots, fearsome monsters, forces of nature, other Super State users, powerful deities, and spacetime destructors. Due to being infused with the seven Chaos Emeralds' power, Super Sonic accordingly commands infinite power and has access to unlimited energy.[4][5]

As Super Sonic, Sonic's innate abilities far surpass his normal ones.[1][6] His strength has been increased to such levels that he can plow through large robots, barriers, and Dr. Eggman's space armada without slowing down, break enormous metal restraints as well as send titanic machines flying with little to no effort, and even knock back Perfect Dark Gaia whose size is on par with a mountain. His trademark super speed has been enhanced dramatically too, approaching the speed of light (671,000,000 mph).[1][7][8] He is similarly capable of making lightning-fast, but precise dashes. Like the traditional Super State, Sonic gains new abilities in this form too, including high-speed run-flight[1] and virtual invulnerability to harm,[9] although his invulnerability can be bypassed if he is hit by something with enough force, like attacks from Big Arms, Solaris, the Egg Salamander, Perfect Dark Gaia, and Titans, and this results in him being knocked backwards, though the distance he is launched depends on how hard he takes the hit. He additionally possesses improved reflexes and agility to match his improved movements and can jump higher as well.

Capable of manipulating Chaos energy in his Super State, Super Sonic is able to freely perform different chaos powers, such as shields that can deflect the enemy's attacks and Chaos Control which allows him to warp time and space, the latter of which is powerful enough to allow him to warp objects as large as the Space Colony ARK with Super Shadow's help into orbit. He can even combine his chaos powers with similar techniques to increase their size and power; as an example, he can combine his signature Super Sonic Boost with users with similar abilities, like Burning Blaze's Burning Fire Boost, in order to deliver stronger impacts. He can also cloak himself in a fiery aura of energy and then launch himself forward with increased speed and enormous force in order to ram opponents or blast through/knock back attacks, and charge objects such as the Egg Mobile and Warp Topaz with energy; in turn, the form is also compatible with other types of energy, allowing him to perform such feats as absorbing blue light to amplify his attacks, combining his attacks with that of the Sol Emerald-powered Burning Blaze, and even using cyber corruption to achieve even more powerful forms.

Due to the positive energy which empowers Super Sonic, he is able to neutralize negative Chaos Emerald energy, thus allowing him to turn people possessed by pure rage back to normal, like when he reverted Perfect Chaos back to normal while purifying it of its anger and rage.[10] Super Sonic can also pass his energy onto others, thereby allowing them to achieve Super States of their own while maintaining his own. [11][12] Also, thanks to his heart and will, he can use the light of his aura to absorb duplicates of Perfect Chaos and even destroy Otherworlds created by the Phantom Ruby.

Like in his natural state, Super Sonic can utilize the Spin Attack, a technique where he curls into a concussive ball or cutting disk and directs himself at his targets. Due to Sonic being in a Super State, this technique's power is greatly amplified as a result. With it, Super Sonic can shred or burrow through just about any substance given enough speed. Highly adept in its usage, Super Sonic can utilize several variants of the Spin Attack for both ground and aerial maneuvers, including the Spin Dash, Spin Jump, Homing Attack, Drop Dash, Focused Homing Attack and the super-charged Light Speed Attack. Super Sonic has also demonstrated the unique ability to generate constructs made of golden energy, such as spears, chains, and even giant copies of his fists and shoes, as well as clones of himself, to deal great amounts of damage to his foes.

Weaknesses[edit | edit source]

Super Sonic's main weakness is that he can only stay transformed for a short time without the sustenance of Ring Energy, as a Super State consumes tremendous amounts of energy.[1][6] Super Sonic can also be reverted back to his base form if his power is forcibly extracted from him, such as when Eggman trapped him onboard the Chaos Energy Cannon in an energy field and drained his power.[13] Super Sonic is also susceptible to the cyber corruption attacks used by The End, which can reduce his maximum Ring count; the largest of these attacks can even temporarily revert his transformation, forcing Sonic to reactivate the Super form with the Chaos Emeralds. It is unknown if Super Sonic's transformation could be cancelled with the use of the Master Emerald, that possesses the ability to neutralize the powers of the Chaos Emeralds.

Invulnerability Limitations[edit | edit source]

Super Sonic's invulnerability may not be absolute. As Super Sonic, he can still receive a Game Over if met with extreme levels of force, such as being crushed by the environment or by a Titan. Super Sonic is also not immune to the effects of being underwater. In games where the form is usable in the main acts, Super Sonic is still slowed down by water and can even drown if he does not use an Aqua Shield or Air bubbles for too long.

At the end of Sonic Frontiers - The Final Horizon, Super Sonic is shown bruised and battered from the stress of accessing the dangerous Cyber Super Sonic form.
