Shadow the Hedgehog
For other uses of the term, see Shadow the Hedgehog (disambiguation)
Shadow the Hedgehog (シャドウ・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Shadō za Hejjihoggu) is a character featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog/Black Arms hybrid who shares many similarities with Sonic the Hedgehog[1]SONICNEXT_allscript (Google Docs). Archived from the original on 27 March 2022. Retrieved on 16 May 2022. “A black hedgehog who looks almost identical to Sonic, and who also matches him to a T in terms of speed. Created as the ultimate life-form by Professor Gerald, the greatest scientific genius of our time, he has an unaging, undying body, and can use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to utilize Chaos Control, a way of manipulating time and space. He grew up with a girl named Maria, who was like a dear sister to him, but his memory of her and her dying promise had traumatized him to the point where he became bent on annihilating the human race out of revenge. After the destruction of the Space Colony ARK (Sonic Adventure 2), he disappeared, but he proved to be alive later, in Sonic Heroes, where Rouge found him in Eggman’s secret base. Since being released from his capsule, most of his memory is gone. It is unclear whether he still holds the same murderous traits he displayed in the past.” and serves as both his primary rival and occasional ally. Shadow was created as the “Ultimate Life Form” (究極生命体 Kyūkyoku Seimeitai) by Gerald Robotnik, utilizing the DNA of Black Doom, as part of Project Shadow. His main purpose was to provide a means of developing a cure for incurable deadly illnesses, particularly for Gerald’s granddaughter Maria Robotnik, with whom he shared a deep bond. However, following his creation, Shadow was captured and placed into stasis by G.U.N. after being deemed a threat to humanity.
Fifty years later, Dr. Eggman released Shadow to assist him in his scheme to conquer the Earth. Initially cooperating with Eggman, Shadow secretly harbored a desire to destroy the planet to avenge Maria, who had been killed by the military. However, he ultimately chose to save the Earth from Gerald’s doomsday plans. Along the way, Shadow lost his memories and embarked on a journey to uncover the truth of his past. During this quest, he encountered Black Doom and the Black Arms, ultimately regaining his memories, uncovering the truth, thwarting Black Doom’s agenda, and saving the world. Following these events, Shadow continued his mission to protect humanity in honor of Maria.
Sharp-witted, always vigilant, and driven by a strong sense of purpose, Shadow is determined to achieve his goals by any means necessary.[2]Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic Characters. Sega of America. Archived from the original on 5 March 2005. Retrieved on 26 October 2017. “Shadow is the spitting image of sonic except for his black body. The world’s greatest scientist, Professor Gerald, created him for a purpose known only to the professor. Ageless and immortal, Shadow has the special ability to harness the power of the Chaos Emerald, which allows him to warp time and space. Sharp-witted and willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, he always seems to be on the edge. Maria, who was raised with Shadow and was Maria’s only friend, died in front of his very eyes. Her final wish was that Shadow save the world. Saving the world from what is a secret only Shadow knows. Traumatized by the grief of her death, Shadow remains strong enough to keep the promise he made to her.” Essentially a darker counterpart to Sonic, Shadow possesses speed and skill comparable to his counterpart and can utilize Chaos Control with a Chaos Emerald to manipulate time and space.[3]Sonic Adventure 2: Battle (Nintendo GameCube) United States instruction booklet, pg. 7. While he typically prefers to work alone and does not consider himself one of Sonic’s closest allies, he has assisted Sonic and his friends when the need arises.

Concept and Creation
Following the success of Sonic Adventure, there was great anticipation for its sequel to become the Dreamcast’s equivalent of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Mega Drive. To bring this vision to life, a team from the Sonic Adventure project was assigned to work at Sega of America, under the leadership of director Takashi Iizuka, while Yuji Naka remained in Japan to oversee other projects like Phantasy Star Online. With the team assembled, brainstorming sessions commenced to shape the direction of Sonic Adventure 2.
Early on, the decision was made to explore the theme of good versus evil, leading to the creation of new characters who would both assist Dr. Eggman and challenge the established heroes. While Yuji Uekawa was responsible for the final design, it was Takashi Iizuka who conceptualized Shadow, envisioning a dark, anti-hero figure with a similar appearance to Sonic but a contrasting personality. During Shadow’s creation, various designs were considered, ranging from long spines to capes or even a missing eye, before Shiro Maekawa finalized his appearance.
Originally named “Terios,” which translates to “reflection of,” likely symbolizing the hero-villain dynamic, Shadow’s distinctive red stripes were inspired by Kabuki makeup,[4]ソニックステーションLIVE! with 悠木碧(2021.3.21放送回) (Japanese). YouTube. ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ【公式】 (21 March 2021). Retrieved on 11 July 2021. according to Kazuyuki Hoshino. Additionally, an early concept artwork sheet in the Sonic the Hedgehog 25th Anniversary Art Book references “Vegeta” from Dragon Ball, indicating further inspiration.
The unveiling of Shadow was shrouded in secrecy, with his identity and nature carefully guarded until Sonic Adventure 2’s announcement. The character was first glimpsed in the game’s trailer, described by GameSpot as an Anti-Sonic due to his darker appearance and fierce expression.[5]Sonic Adventure 2 Hands-On. GameSpot. Retrieved on 2 December 2019.
Following Shadow’s apparent demise in Sonic Adventure 2, a significant fanbase clamored for his return, prompting his inclusion as a playable character in Sonic Heroes and his own game, Shadow the Hedgehog.[6]PAUL.STR337 (18 July 2011). SUMMER OF SONIC 2011: SONIC TEAM ON STAGE. Sonic Stadium. “Takashi Iizuka: The Shadow character idea was something that we all had in our minds in the dev team when we were creating the first Sonic Adventure. When creating that game, we had the intention of creating a rival character for Sonic Adventure 2 and we didn’t really talk about it that much, but we were all thinking about it. When we were working on Sonic Adventure 2, we all did a bit of brainstorming and we brought this to the table and prepared the storyline for the Dark side and the Hero side. As you know in the story, Shadow was only meant to appear in that single title. But because of the reaction of the fans, we decided to bring him back in Sonic Heroes and eventually you saw him in his own title.” Takashi Iizuka revealed that maintaining the mystery surrounding Shadow and featuring him in his own game had been their intention since his introduction.[7]Shadowing a Hedgehog. Yahoo!. Retrieved on 16 December 2008. Initially, there were fan requests for Sonic’s character to wield a gun,[8]Shadow the Wrestling Hedgehog. 1Up.com. Retrieved on 26 January 2009. but this idea was dismissed, leading to the decision to focus on Shadow’s unique identity to expand the Sonic brand.[9]Sega’s Yuji Naka Talks!. GameSpy. Appearance
Shadow is an anthropomorphic hedgehog with distinctive features. He sports red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, a black nose, a tan muzzle, and small triangular ears with tan canals. His head is adorned with six quills, with four curving upwards and two curving downwards. Additionally, he has two spines on his back and a short, pointed tail. Notably, red stripes adorn each of his head quills, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs.
In terms of attire, Shadow dons white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, along with Air Shoes that also feature black cuffs and red tongues. Furthermore, he wears Inhibitor Rings on each wrist and ankle.
Following the events of Shadow the Hedgehog, the red paint on the front of Shadow’s Air Shoes has been worn off, and his eyes have taken on a more reddish-orange hue.
In the Sonic Riders series, Shadow adds a pair of green and gray sunglasses to his ensemble, which he wears atop his head. Additionally, he opts for high-top tennis shoes similar to his Air Shoes.
In The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Shadow is depicted wearing a green apron and a matching newsboy cap.
Personality
With a personality that stands in stark contrast to Sonic’s, Shadow can be described as a brooding loner. He typically maintains a cool and detached demeanor, only occasionally revealing glimpses of vulnerability. Preferring solitude, he tends to keep his distance from others and is known for his blunt and reserved nature. Despite his reserved demeanor, Shadow is adept at combat and always speaks with purpose; when he makes a threat, he fully intends to follow through.
Regarded as one of the most ruthless and aggressive characters in the series, Shadow’s demeanor commands respect from his enemies. Alongside his dark and violent tendencies, he can also display smugness and stubbornness. His interactions with others often come across as callous, as he expresses his opinions without concern for their impact. Shadow possesses a sharp wit and is quick to respond to challenges, such as when he retorted to Sonic’s accusation of being a faker.[10]Sonic Team USA (23 June 2001). Sonic Adventure 2. Dreamcast. Sega. Cutscene: Face off with Sonic. “Shadow: That blue hedgehog again, of all places… / Sonic: I’ve found you, faker! / Shadow: Faker? I think you’re the fake hedgehog around here. You’re comparing yourself to me? Ha! You’re not even good enough to be my fake!”
Shadow’s motivations are complex and often tied to his own inner struggles. He has grappled with mental instability in the past, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from traumatic events involving Maria. However, he has shown resilience in overcoming these challenges, choosing to move forward while keeping Maria’s memory close to his heart. Despite initially harboring disdain for humanity, Shadow’s perspective evolves as he remembers his promise to Maria and now seeks to protect humanity in her honor.
Throughout various incidents, Shadow demonstrates unwavering determination in pursuing his goals, regardless of the cost. He is relentless in his pursuit of justice and will go to great lengths to achieve his objectives. Despite his formidable nature, Shadow maintains a strong sense of identity and is rarely swayed by external influences, firmly asserting his identity as Shadow the Hedgehog, even in the face of doubt.
Since when did you become someone who secretly works for everyone’s peace?
Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Channel
…I’m not interested in peace or whatever. I don’t care what happens to others. I just don’t like it when fools do whatever they please on this planet. Whether it’s the doctor or anyone else, including you. Don’t get me wrong.
In Shadow’s own words, he expresses disinterest in peace and indifference towards the well-being of others. His disdain is directed towards those he perceives as foolish, regardless of whether they are villains like Dr. Eggman or heroes like Sonic. Despite this seeming opposition to villainy, Shadow’s confrontations are indiscriminate, driven by his condemnation of those he deems as foolish. He rejects gratitude for his heroic actions, viewing it as a waste of time, and maintains a grim and uncaring demeanor. However, beneath this facade lies a more compassionate side, as evidenced by his willingness to sacrifice himself to protect others.
Despite his outward apathy, Shadow harbors sympathy for others, particularly those who have experienced tragedies similar to his own.[11]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/level: Central City (Tails’ Episode). “Shadow: There’s no need to repeat past tragedies! Nobody else ever needs to go through the things that I have!” His fear of his own power, inherited from Maria, prevents him from using it recklessly.[12]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/level: Gimme Shelter (Shadow’s Episode). “Shadow: Why did Gerald give me a soul?! / Rouge: He was not interested in researching weapons. He was researching a way to bring happiness and hope to all people. But, he was forced by the government and by the military to use his research for war. That’s why he gave you […] a soul identical to his beloved granddaughter, Maria. […] His hope was that no matter how crazed and obsessed with destruction mankind might became, the weapons themselves would never fight. Shadow, you are afraid of your own power. It troubles you. But, you’ve never used your power recklessly. You’ve never used it selfishly. Gerald’s wishes have come true.” He once viewed himself as a weapon and believed that he and others like him would eventually need to be destroyed to achieve world peace.[13]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/level: Emerald City (Shadow’s Episode). “Sonic: Maybe you’ve forgotten, but I seem to recall you saving humanity at some point. / Shadow: …That was for Maria. / Sonic: Exactly! If you have a heart, you would never use your power for the forces of evil! There’s no way you could! Weapons aren’t supposed to have ‘hearts.’ But, both you and Emerl do! You guys… You aren’t just weapons! / Shadow: Hmph! No, you are wrong. We were created as weapons. If the people of this world ever want peace, they must destroy us.”
Shadow’s deep-seated depression over the loss of Maria fuels his solitary nature, but his dedication to protecting the planet and upholding her dream of peace and prosperity is evident. He shares a strong bond with his teammates, Rouge and Omega, despite his aloof demeanor, demonstrating his underlying compassion. While he often brushes off kindness or sympathy directed towards him, there are moments where he acknowledges and appreciates genuine care, such as when Amy reminds him of his promise to Maria or when Rouge pledges her support during Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
Although Shadow often fights for what he perceives as the greater good, his methods and moral compass classify him as an anti-hero. He is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, even if it means taking risks and acting impulsively.[14]Sega Studio USA (15 December 2005). Shadow the Hedgehog. Nintendo GameCube. Sega. Cutscene: After Westopolis (Hero mission). “Sonic: Now that was sweet, Shadow! / Shadow: Yeah… Well I’m not here to save you! / Sonic: Thought you might say something like that! How about a little friendly competition? / Shadow: Don’t waste my time.” This determination has sometimes led him to clash with Sonic, making him appear as an adversary despite not being inherently evil. Alongside Rouge, he has engaged in opportunistic behavior, such as claiming prize money and jewels[15]Sonic Team (4 November 2010). Sonic Free Riders. Xbox 360. Sega. Cutscene: Cutscene 1 (Team Dark). “Omochao: Huh? By my count we’re one team short! What could possibly have come up to keep them from the ceremony?! Ah ah! There they are! Shadow and Rouge… Which means the missing racers were Team Dark! / Rouge: Would you pipe down? We just came here to collect the cash prize. Until the first race starts we’re off the clock, darling. / Omochao: What are you talking about?! The opening ceremony started over fifteen minutes ago! / Shadow: I’ve no interest in these formalities. / Omochao: I guess not everybody here is as excited as me… Now I feel kind of self-conscious for getting all excited before. / Shadow: Pageantry aside, we’re here to win. You can be sure of that. /Omochao: But there’s only two of you. If you’re here, where’s your third teammate? / Rouge: Don’t worry about us. The two of us can handle this just fine.” without adhering to event protocols.
However, Shadow also displays moments of selflessness and heroism. He once risked his life to save the earth from destruction and aided Silver in uncovering the truth about the Solaris Project. Despite his serious demeanor, Shadow occasionally participates in leisurely activities and social events, such as attending Amy’s birthday celebration and engaging in a murder mystery party. He also demonstrates a competitive spirit by participating in various racing and sports competitions.

With his speed, Shadow can scale vertical surfaces, outpace bullets, and attack with lightning speed.[35]Sonic Team (14 November 2006). Sonic the Hedgehog. Xbox 360. Sega. Cutscene: Shadow’s infiltration (Shadow Episode). By enveloping himself in an orange energy field, he can temporarily accelerate beyond the sound barrier both on the ground and in midair, allowing him to smash through obstacles and enemies like a living projectile. He can even achieve light-speed momentarily using certain techniques.
Despite some inconsistencies in comparisons to Sonic’s speed, it is generally accepted that they are equals in this regard. Shadow demonstrates complete mastery of his speed in any environment, running at maximum tilt in straight lines, tight circles, and sharp turns with full control over his momentum. His stamina appears to be limitless, as he never shows signs of exhaustion from running. Additionally, Shadow can utilize his speed to perform impressive feats, such as creating powerful winds to attack or manipulate opponents, similar to aerokinesis.
As an experienced athlete[36]Official Sonic Heroes website (Japanese). Characters: Team Dark. Sega. Archived from the original on 12 November 2004. He can swiftly evade obstacles with precise movements, expertly grind on Grind Rails, dodge bullets, and execute various aerial tricks. Utilizing the Light Speed Dash, he can dash across trails of rings at super speed, enhancing his maneuverability.
Shadow also boasts superhuman strength, capable of matching Sonic in power. With effort,[ref]Shadow the Hedgehog (Nintendo GameCube) United States instruction booklet, pg. 15. he can overturn objects many times his size, such as trucks, buses, and large slabs of concrete with ease. Additionally, he possesses exceptional kineticism, precision, and reaction time, complementing his speed. Due to his “ultimate life form” physiology, Shadow’s body is immortal and does not age, making him effectively invulnerable.[39]Mario and Sonic Tokyo. Sega. Additionally, his partial Black Arms heritage grants him a connection to their hive-mind, enabling him to sense their presence and resist their paralyzing nerve gas.[41]Sega Studio USA (15 November 2005). That’s where the answers are… I’ve got to get to that comet!”
Shadow’s indomitable will and determination are key aspects of his character. He refuses to give up in any situation and remains steadfast in pursuing his goals, even in seemingly impossible circumstances. For instance, he can immobilize or slow down adversaries to gain a speed advantage, execute surprise attacks by instantly appearing in front or behind opponents, infuse his strikes with distorted space for devastating blows, conceal himself within warped space, assail foes with pockets of distorted space, and even bolster his own regenerative abilities and defensive maneuvers. However, Shadow is unable to utilize Chaos Control without access to Chaos Emeralds to serve as a power source.[51]Sonic Boom 2013 – Part 2/3 – Q&A Session (41:30). YouTube. MajinReid (13 August 2013). Retrieved on 26 May 2021. “Takashi Iizuka (as translated by the Q&A board’s translator): If [Shadow the Hedgehog] doesn’t have a Chaos Emerald he cannot use Chaos Control”
In addition to Chaos Control, Shadow possesses several other chaos powers, one of which is his Chaos Spear technique. With this ability, he can hurl multiple bolts of Chaos Emerald energy at his adversaries, capable of either paralyzing or inflicting injury, depending on their potency. However, his most formidable technique is the Chaos Blast. This chaotic power involves Shadow unleashing a surge of Chaos Emerald energy in a colossal explosion, obliterating everything within a radius of 10-20 yards.
Shadow’s primary offensive tactic is the Spin Attack, a technique where he rolls into a concussive ball or sharp-edged disk and propels himself at his targets. This maneuver allows him to tear through or tunnel through virtually any material when given sufficient velocity. Proficient in its application, Shadow can employ various versions of the Spin Attack for both ground-based and aerial maneuvers, including the Spin Dash, Spin Jump, Homing Attack, and the Light Speed Attack, which moves at the speed of light.
Even in the absence of his Spin Attack, Shadow is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. Reflective of his nature and formidable abilities, Shadow employs a fighting style emphasizing powerful strikes, such as forceful chops, high spinning kicks, reverse spins, downward kicks, or rapid barrages of punches and kicks. Moreover, many of Shadow’s more potent hand-to-hand combat techniques heavily rely on his utilization of Chaos Control for distortion effects to repel opponents and his Air Shoes’ exhaust for incinerating adversaries.
Shadow demonstrates adeptness in combat strategy, capable of making split-second calculations or adjustments to gain the upper hand in battle. His tactics encompass creative utilization of his surroundings, exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses, and outmaneuvering adversaries.
As evidenced during the second EX Grand Prix, Shadow exhibits skill with Extreme Gear. Throughout the tournament, he proves to be a formidable competitor, even defeating some of the world’s premier Extreme Gear riders. While riding an Extreme Gear, Shadow showcases proficiency in traversing Grind Rails, executing intricate aerial tricks, and seamlessly incorporating chaos powers and combat techniques.
Shadow possesses exceptional proficiency in driving and piloting various types of vehicles. He ranks among the top racecar drivers in the universe, displaying remarkable skill with the Dark Reaper. Additionally, he exhibits precise control over weaponized buggies, armed motorcycles, modified gliders, hovercrafts equipped with machine guns, bipedal mechs, and alien apparatus. As an expert gunner, Shadow displays impeccable accuracy when operating weaponry like Gun Lifts and GUN turrets.
Unlike Sonic, who eschews firearms, Shadow is willing to utilize such weaponry and demonstrates adeptness with a wide array of weapons in Shadow the Hedgehog. His proficiency extends to close combat weapons, guns, cannons, lock-on weapons, and lasers. Shadow also possesses some knowledge of machinery, as evidenced by his ability to manipulate a deactivated Omega and determine its standby mode.[52]Sonic Team (14 November 2006). Sonic the Hedgehog. Xbox 360. Sega. Cutscene: Omega located (Shadow Episode).
Furthermore, Shadow exhibits telekinetic abilities, allowing him to effortlessly manipulate an Extreme Gear with his mind.[53]Sonic Team (21 February 2006). Sonic Riders. Nintendo GameCube. Sega.
Despite his already formidable abilities, Shadow possesses the capability to enhance his strength by accessing an even greater power within himself. This power is so potent that upon removing his Inhibitor Rings, he transforms into a formidable force of unrestrained energy. Upon unleashing this power, Shadow emits immense amounts of energy, forming an impenetrable barrier around himself.[54]Sonic Team (14 November 2006). Sonic the Hedgehog. Xbox 360. Sega. Cutscene: Showdown with Mephiles (Shadow Episode).
In this heightened state, Shadow experiences a significant boost in both strength and speed,[55]Sega (13 November 2011). Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Wii. Sega. Area/level: London Party. “Shy Guy: What does Shadow wear on his wrists and ankles? / … / Shy Guy: He’s faster and stronger without the rings, but he gets worn out more quickly!” enabling him to overwhelm numerous clones of Mephiles the Dark simultaneously. However, utilizing this full power exhausts him more rapidly than usual.
Equipment
Shadow’s signature footwear, the Air Shoes, are specially designed to enhance his speed, serving as the primary catalyst for his remarkable swiftness. These shoes generate small jet streams, allowing Shadow to hover-skate at velocities purportedly surpassing even Sonic’s renowned speed.[56]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. “Shadow Run: Shadow’s running skill. With help from his Air Shoes, he can run faster than Sonic.” Moreover, he can employ the exhaust from his Air Shoes for various purposes, such as launching fiery attacks against adversaries, enhancing his leaps, or achieving midair hovering.
In addition to his Air Shoes, Shadow wears four Inhibitor Rings, one on each wrist and ankle, which regulate the amount of power he channels during combat and other activities. By removing these rings, Shadow can unleash his full potential.
Throughout Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow demonstrated proficiency with an extensive array of weaponry. From close-quarter weapons like Survival Knives and Black Swords, to firearms including Pistols and Sub-Machine Guns, as well as heavy artillery such as Bazookas and Grenade Launchers, Shadow proved adept with a wide range of armaments. Furthermore, he wielded specialized equipment like lock-on weaponry such as 8-Shot RPGs and Worm Shooters, as well as energy-based arms like Laser Rifles and Refractors.
Transformations
Super Shadow
Main article: Super Shadow
By tapping into the energy of the seven Chaos Emeralds, Shadow can undergo a transformative process known as the Super State, becoming Super Shadow. In this elevated form, all of Shadow’s abilities are vastly amplified, pushing them beyond their usual limits, and his command over chaos powers reaches its zenith. Notably, he gains the ability to fly and becomes nearly impervious to harm. While initially struggling to sustain this state due to lack of experience,[57]Sonic Team USA (23 June 2001). However, maintaining this transformation drains a significant amount of energy, restricting its duration.

However, the duration of this state is limited, and it fades after a brief period.
Dark Shadow

When Shadow’s consciousness is driven by malevolent intentions, he can access an intensified form known as Dark Shadow. In this state, Shadow becomes temporarily impervious to harm and gains the ability to unleash a powerful Chaos Blast on a grand scale. However, similar to Hero Shadow, this state only persists for a brief duration.
Chaos Boost
Main article: Chaos Boost
When acting independently, Shadow has the capability to enter an augmented state referred to as the Chaos Boost. In this state, his abilities undergo a substantial enhancement, allowing him to achieve speeds akin to warping, near invincibility, and heightened chaos powers.
Color Powers
Main article: Color Power
By harnessing various variants of Hyper-go-on from Wisps, Shadow can utilize specific Color Powers to assume different forms, such as a drill, a laser, or even a planet, each with its own distinct abilities. To date, Shadow has demonstrated the ability to transform into the Cyan Laser, Yellow Drill, and Indigo Asteroid. However, sustaining these transformations necessitates a consistent supply of Hyper-go-on.
Weaknesses
During the period when Shadow suffered from amnesia, he was susceptible to manipulation due to his confusion about his identity and his desire to uncover his past. Dr. Eggman and Black Doom were able to exploit this vulnerability by feeding him false information and manipulating him with visions. However, once Shadow discovered his true purpose, he became more resilient to deception.
As a part of the Black Arms, Shadow is partially connected to Black Doom, which renders him susceptible to mind control from Black Doom himself. Nevertheless, Shadow can resist this control through sheer determination and strength of will.
Despite his immortality, Shadow can still be incapacitated if caught off guard. This leaves him temporarily unable to move or speak immediately after the attack.[61]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/level: Gimme Shelter (Shadow’s Episode). “Rouge: Hey, not bad! / Guard Robo: … … … an opening! / Shadow: Guh…! / Rouge: Shadow! What happened? Can’t you even walk on your own? / Shadow: … … …” Although he may recover and resume fighting later on, pushing himself too far in such situations can jeopardize his life,[62]Sonic Team (27 February 2004). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/level: Central City (Tails’ Episode). “Rouge: Shadow, what do you think you’re doing? Relationships
Gerald Robotnik
Shadow, I’m counting on you.
— Gerald Robotnik and Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog
I know, Professor… The Ultimate life form born to ensure peace and justice amongst all of mankind. Now, I know what I have to do.
Shadow was engineered by the esteemed scientist Gerald Robotnik, who utilized DNA from Black Doom, the leader of the Black Arms, in his creation process. Prior to Black Doom’s involvement, Gerald had made numerous attempts to craft the Ultimate Lifeform, with the Biolizard being the closest result. When Black Doom offered his assistance to Gerald, the scientist agreed under the condition that he would hand over the seven Chaos Emeralds in return. Black Doom provided his DNA, which was incorporated into Gerald’s existing samples, resulting in the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog.
Gerald seemed to evoke a sense of happiness in Shadow, possibly acting as a surrogate father figure to him. This is evident in Gerald referring to Shadow as his “son” and instilling genuine emotions in him to prevent him from being merely a weapon, as the government intended. However, despite these emotional connections, Shadow expressed his resolve to “destroy all evil that the professor had created” after defeating the Finalhazard. This suggests that while he may still hold respect for Gerald, he believes it is necessary to stop any negative consequences resulting from Gerald’s actions after he became mentally unstable.
During the climax of Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow uncovered the true purpose of his creation through a recorded video left by Gerald. In an effort to move forward and honor Gerald’s genuine wish of protecting the planet, Shadow resolved to eliminate the Black Arms and any potential threats to Earth’s safety.[63]Sega Studio USA (15 November 2005). Shadow the Hedgehog. Nintendo GameCube. Sega. Area/level: The Last Way.
Maria Robotnik
Maria… I still remember what I promised you… For the people of this planet, I promise you… REVENGE!
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Adventure 2
Professor Gerald’s granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, held a special place in Shadow’s heart and was perhaps the one person who brought him the most joy. Their bond was incredibly close, with Shadow’s feelings for Maria being the closest he ever came to experiencing love.[64]Black, Fletcher. “Sonic Boom: Cast”. Sonic the Hedgehog: PRIMA Official Game Guide. Prima Games. p. 5. He regarded her as a sister and cherished their time together deeply. Maria played a significant role in guiding Shadow’s life, reassuring him about his purpose and dreams. They both shared a common dream of visiting Earth together someday.
Tragically, the organization G.U.N. deemed Project Shadow as too great a threat to the world’s safety. In their efforts to eliminate any ties to the project, they carried out a raid on the ARK, during which Maria was fatally shot by a G.U.N. soldier. Her final words to Shadow were “Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog.”
In an interview with 1UP, Shadow expressed that if he could alter one aspect of his past, it would be sacrificing his own life to save Maria’s. The loss of someone who truly cared for him deeply haunts him to this day. Despite grappling with this grief, Shadow remains resilient and remains committed to fulfilling his promise to Maria: to bring happiness to the people of Earth.
Following his bout of amnesia, Maria was the sole memory that lingered with Shadow. By the conclusion of Shadow the Hedgehog, he begins to move past his tragic history, yet he persists in safeguarding the world in her memory.
Dr. Eggman
You’ll regret this, doctor… Even if I’m not real, I’m still the ultimate life form, Shadow the Hedgehog!
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes
Dr. Eggman, the grandson of Gerald Robotnik, is one of Shadow’s most formidable adversaries, with their animosity rooted in their familial connection. Their initial encounter occurred during Sonic Adventure 2, where Eggman freed Shadow from stasis on Prison Island, leading to Shadow owing him a favor. However, Shadow harbored ulterior motives, using Eggman’s ambitions to seek revenge for Maria’s death. Despite ostensibly aligning with Eggman during this incident, Shadow ultimately parted ways after the battle with the Finalhazard.
Subsequently, Eggman’s manipulation of Shadow’s amnesia led to the hedgehog briefly siding with him again. However, after the events of Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow emerged as a recurring thorn in Eggman’s side.[65]TailsTube #2 (feat. ???). YouTube. Sonic the Hedgehog (9 June 2022). Retrieved on 9 June 2022. Eggman: “Shadow’s gone on to become another thorn in my side. He’s not one of Sonic’s buddies, but he’s still a problem all the same.” While Shadow may collaborate with Eggman against greater threats, he cares little for the doctor’s well-being unless it intersects with his own interests or those of his allies.[66]Backbone Entertainment, Sega Studio USA (24 November 2006). Sonic Rivals. Sega. Area/level: Forest Falls Zone (Shadow). “Shadow: The doctor’s acting strange… it makes no sense, but this has nothing to do with me… Hmm, guess this was just a waste of my time…” Ultimately, Shadow’s disdain for foolish or harmful actions drives him to oppose Eggman when necessary, irrespective of their familial ties.
Sonic the Hedgehog
So, there’s more to you than just looking like me. What are you anyway?
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Adventure 2
Shadow and Sonic the Hedgehog share a complex relationship characterized by rivalry, occasional collaboration, and mutual respect. Initially, Shadow sought to dismiss Sonic, but their encounter in Sonic Adventure 2 quickly ignited a competitive rivalry. Throughout their interactions, Sonic’s daring feats and resilience impressed Shadow, leading to a begrudging respect between them. Despite their rivalry, their goals often align, yet their differing views on justice and morality occasionally lead to conflicts.
Their initial misunderstandings, including Shadow’s belief that Sonic was copying him, added tension to their relationship, particularly during Shadow’s period of amnesia in Sonic Heroes. While their rivalry has softened over time, occasional disagreements still arise, sometimes escalating into intense battles. Shadow is unhesitant in opposing Sonic if he perceives him as foolish or reckless, akin to his stance against Dr. Eggman.
In many ways, Shadow and Sonic are polar opposites, yet their shared goals and occasional moments of camaraderie highlight the complexity of their dynamic.[67]Sonic Rivals 2 (PlayStation Portable) United States instruction booklet, pg. 10. Despite their differences, their rivalry serves as a driving force, pushing each other to greater heights.
If knowing you has taught me anything, there’s always another way.
Shadow the Hedgehog, “Grim Tidings“
Despite their differences, Shadow and Sonic have collaborated on numerous occasions, demonstrating a willingness to put aside their rivalry for the greater good. Shadow assisted Sonic in defeating Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes, aided in returning both teams to their proper time period, and saved Sonic from Silver’s second attempt on his life in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). He showed genuine grief at Sonic’s apparent death and acknowledged the necessity of Sonic’s help in defeating Solaris.[68]Sonic Team (14 November 2006). Sonic the Hedgehog. Xbox 360. Sega. Area/level: End of the World. “Shadow: Certainly, it might have been possible, if he was still alive.” Additionally, Shadow has displayed concern for Sonic’s safety in various situations, such as in Sonic Colors for the Nintendo DS and Sonic Forces.
Despite occasional tensions, there is a mutual respect between Shadow and Sonic.[69]Sonic Central: Since Shadow is Sonic’s enemy, what does this game mean for Sonic? Is he your main enemy in this game? How does Robotnik fit into things? / Sonic Team: Shadow is more of a nemesis to Sonic rather than a true enemy; they may be adversaries but there is a mutual respect between the two of them. They understand each other’s strengths and capabilities, and while they may not always see eye-to-eye, they recognize each other’s contributions. In recent games, both characters have shown more confidence in each other’s decisions and actions.
However, Shadow does have a distaste for being mistaken for Sonic, as seen in various games where he reacts strongly to being compared to him.[70]Arzest, Spike Chunsoft (18 March 2016). Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Nintendo 3DS. Sega. Area/level: Interacting with a Mii. “Shadow: I’m Shadow. Shadow the Hedgehog. …What? I look like Sonic? You have to be joking. Don’t you ever put me in the same boat as that inferior half-wit!” This highlights Shadow’s desire to maintain his individual identity and independence, separate from Sonic’s.
Shadow and Sonic share a unique dynamic characterized by their ability to match each other physically and mentally. Their exceptional abilities set them apart from others, making it challenging for anyone else to keep up with them. Despite their differences and occasional clashes, they are among the few who can engage with each other intimately, offering opinions, meddling, and even trying to thwart each other’s plans.
Sonic, in particular, has a knack for reaching Shadow on a deeper level, although Shadow may not always admit it. Sonic’s presence is both troublesome and significant to Shadow, as it pushes him to grow and improve. While Sonic is open to introspection and self-discovery, Shadow finds Sonic’s influence sometimes irksome. Nevertheless, their encounters often lead to personal and philosophical clashes, reflecting their shared commitment to following their own desires and beliefs.
Their relationship is complex, characterized by moments of camaraderie and rivalry. Despite their differences, Shadow and Sonic’s interactions shape and challenge each other, ultimately driving them forward in their respective journeys.
Rouge the Bat
Shadow… Even if you believe everyone in the world will be against you. Know that I’ll always remain by your side. Remember that.
Rouge the Bat, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Rouge the Bat is one of Shadow’s most trusted companions, with whom he shares a deep bond. Despite not spending much casual time together, they have a profound appreciation and respect for each other. Rouge and Omega are the individuals whom Shadow cares about and values the most, with Rouge being particularly significant in his life. Their relationship is built on mutual trust and understanding.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow saved Rouge’s life when she was trapped in Security Hall, although he later claimed that he returned for the Chaos Emeralds she had acquired. However, Rouge hinted that there might have been more to his actions than he let on. Their conversation was cut short by Dr. Eggman.
In Sonic Heroes, even without his memories, Shadow instinctively saved Rouge from Omega’s attacks. Later, he showed signs of remembering her rivalry with Knuckles over the Master Emerald, indicating a return of his memories.
In Sonic Battle, Rouge offers Shadow shelter at Club Rouge when he is injured. In a dream sequence, Shadow acknowledges her as an ally, and upon waking up, he fails to properly thank her for her assistance, which seems to slightly offend her.
In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Shadow demonstrates his protective instincts towards Rouge, catching her from a fall and shielding her from danger. When Omega reveals that he will trap Shadow in the future, Rouge reassures him of her unwavering support, to which Shadow responds affirmatively. Despite the events being erased due to time manipulation, it is implied in Sonic Forces that Rouge remained loyal to Shadow, as she maintains contact with him even when he is believed to have gone rogue.[71]Sonic Team (7 November 2017). Sonic Forces. Nintendo Switch. Sega. Area/level: Chemical Plant. “Shadow: Rouge, have you found the intel I was looking for? / Rouge: No, not yet. But I have reports that Eggman’s database is located at the Chemical Plant. If we can check that out, we might find something there.”
Their relationship is characterized by mutual trust, support, and a deep understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
In Sonic Rivals, after Shadow rescues Rouge from Eggman Nega, Rouge suggests that they go treasure hunting together and use Eggman Nega’s device to glimpse into their own future. However, Shadow declines the offer, and the story concludes with Rouge still attempting to persuade him to join her in searching for the remaining cards.
In Sonic Rivals 2, their interaction is less friendly compared to their previous encounters, although their overall relationship appears to be more focused on partnership when they team up for specific occasions. Shadow is determined to prevent Rouge and Knuckles from reaching the Chaos Emeralds at any cost, attempting to manipulate the Chaos-tracking device from Rouge. When Rouge assures Shadow that he can trust her and reveals information about the Ifrit, Shadow demands to know the identity of her client, but Rouge refuses to disclose it, prompting Shadow to angrily order her to stop. Despite his efforts to catch up to her, Rouge continues to withhold information about her client, leading to a confrontation between them. This demonstrates that while they may cooperate at times, they do not hesitate to clash when their goals conflict.
In Sonic Free Riders, Shadow and Rouge, alongside E-10000B, form Team Dark with the primary goal of winning the treasure and prize money. Unlike in previous games, Shadow appears to be content with assisting Rouge in obtaining the treasure she desires.
E-123 Omega
You should’ve known better than to send Omega on an op like this.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Forces (Episode Shadow)
Shadow and Omega share a unique bond characterized by trust and mutual understanding, despite their initially intimidating exteriors. Their relationship transcends their roles as weapons of destruction, evolving into a genuine friendship. As described by Rouge, they complement each other perfectly, akin to chili and hot dogs. This bond is evident throughout their interactions in various games.
In Sonic Heroes, Shadow demonstrates his concern for Omega’s well-being, showcasing the beginnings of their friendship. This connection is further highlighted in Shadow the Hedgehog, where Shadow willingly assists Omega in challenging stages like Iron Jungle and Lava Shelter.
In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Shadow’s genuine sadness upon encountering the deactivated Omega in the distant future underscores the depth of their relationship. Despite Rouge’s urging to press forward, Shadow is visibly affected by Omega’s fate. Both Shadow and Rouge express dismay at the revelation that Omega was reprogrammed to target Shadow due to humanity’s fear of his formidable abilities.
Through their shared experiences and unwavering support for one another, Shadow and Omega exemplify a bond built on trust, camaraderie, and mutual respect.
Black Doom
I don’t know who he is, but for now, I have to believe him. That’s it.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog
The relationship between Shadow and Black Doom, though brief, has had a profound impact on Shadow’s life. Shadow’s creation involved a deal between Black Doom and Professor Gerald, making Black Doom technically Shadow’s biological father as Shadow was made from Black Doom’s blood.
Throughout the events of Shadow the Hedgehog, Black Doom relentlessly pursues Shadow, attempting to sway him to his side and convince him of humanity’s supposed wickedness. Despite Shadow’s opposition, Black Doom persists in trying to recruit him, emphasizing extreme loyalty and respect while showing little concern for Shadow’s well-being.
Black Doom’s attitude towards Shadow is largely dismissive, viewing him merely as a tool to be used for his own purposes. He demands perfection from Shadow, showing little tolerance for mistakes or failures, regardless of the difficulty of the tasks assigned to him.
In the end, Shadow rejects Black Doom’s ideology and chooses to oppose him, ultimately defeating him and thwarting his plans to punish humanity. This decision reflects Shadow’s determination to forge his own path and reject the influence of his biological father.[72]Sega Studio USA (15 November 2005). Shadow the Hedgehog. Nintendo GameCube. Sega. Cutscene: Last Story. “Shadow: I’ve heard enough! You’re boring me to death, Black Doom! You’re going down!”
Mephiles the Dark
You have no desire for revenge, you only crave destruction. Your only lust is to fuel Iblis, until there is nothing left of time itself.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Mephiles the Dark is one of Shadow’s most formidable adversaries. In their initial encounter, Shadow sensed a familiarity with Mephiles, although he did not know who he was at the time. Mephiles then sent Shadow to the future. When they met again, Mephiles attempted to persuade Shadow to turn against humanity, but Shadow rejected his offer.
Following their battle, Shadow sought information about Mephiles to stop him. This investigation led him to the Solaris Project, where Shadow sealed Mephiles in the Scepter of Darkness shortly after his creation. Mephiles vowed to remember Shadow and swore to kill him, revealing the source of his obsession with Shadow.
Their conflict continued in Dusty Desert, where Mephiles attempted to manipulate Shadow into joining him. However, Shadow saw through Mephiles’ deception and recognized his desire for destruction. Despite Shadow’s efforts, he failed to seal Mephiles, who questioned Shadow’s commitment to saving humanity despite their mistreatment of him. Shadow reaffirmed his determination to continue fighting.
Ultimately, both Solaris and Mephiles were erased from existence, along with any memories or connections they had with Shadow.
Silver the Hedgehog
Mephiles isn’t trying to help you create a better future… He’s trying to eliminate the past.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)
Shadow and Silver the Hedgehog initially found themselves at odds due to Silver being deceived by Mephiles and targeting Sonic for the supposed future destruction he would cause. Shadow intervened in Silver’s second attempt on Sonic’s life, leading to a confrontation between the two. However, their animosity evolved into partnership during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).
After a confrontation where Shadow was impressed by Silver’s ability to wield Chaos Control, Shadow enlightened Silver about Mephiles’s manipulation. Together, they traveled back in time to witness the Solaris Project accident, each pursuing their own objectives: Shadow sealing Mephiles, and Silver witnessing the events involving Princess Elise and Iblis. Despite their differences, they cooperated effectively and successfully achieved their goals.
During the battle against Solaris, Shadow and Silver, along with others, witnessed Sonic’s apparent demise, leading Shadow to silently acknowledge Mephiles’s manipulation. Recognizing the villain’s cunning, Shadow expressed regret that their plan could have succeeded if Sonic had survived. They later joined forces to revive Sonic and confront Solaris, resulting in the timeline being altered.
In the Sonic Rivals games, Shadow and Silver maintain a rivalry, with Shadow initially doubting Silver’s motives and theories regarding Dr. Eggman. However, when Silver’s suspicions are proven correct, Shadow exhibits tolerance towards him. Despite this, in Sonic Rivals 2, their relationship becomes more contentious as Silver becomes determined to prevent Shadow from interfering with his objectives.

It is my desire to bring hope to humanity. I can’t stand it…
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Battle
Initially, Shadow did not harbor hatred towards humanity; in fact, he made a promise to his best friend Maria to give them a chance to lead happy lives. However, his perspective shifted dramatically after Maria was killed by G.U.N., leading him to develop a deep-seated animosity towards humanity for their role in her death. Upon his reawakening, Shadow was consumed by thoughts of vengeance against humanity, believing that he had promised Maria to seek retribution on their behalf. However, upon recalling his true promise to Maria, he chose to set aside his desire for revenge and instead risked his life to protect humanity.
During his amnesiac state, Shadow displayed indifference towards humanity, viewing them as insignificant and showing no sympathy towards their plight. However, upon regaining his memories, he once again embraced his commitment to safeguard humanity in honor of his promise to Maria and to fulfill his purpose. Despite harboring reservations[73]Sonic Team (27 February 2004)). Sonic Battle. Game Boy Advance. Sega. Area/level: Ending sequence (Emerl’s Episode). “Shadow: This was Gerald’s final program… Should a weapon go out of control, the weapon will terminate itself… … … … It is my desire to bring hope to humanity. I can’t stand it…” and personal dislike towards humanity, Shadow has developed a desire to inspire hope among them. In his confrontations with Mephiles during the Solaris incident, Shadow declared that he would continue to fight if the world ever turned against him, underscoring that humanity’s perception of him as a friend or foe ultimately rests with them.
Miles “Tails” Prower
Hmph. Looks like you’ll never understand. The builders will never know how their creations truly feel.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Battle
Miles “Tails” Prower and Shadow initially found themselves at odds in Sonic Adventure 2, with Shadow impersonating Sonic and leading to Tails’ brief imprisonment on Prison Island. However, as the game progressed, they became allies in the effort to save the planet from the threat posed by the Space Colony ARK. Their relationship often hinges on their respective goals, especially considering Tails’ close association with Sonic, who is Shadow’s antithesis.
Throughout various encounters in Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle, and Sonic Rivals 2, Shadow and Tails found themselves on opposite sides. In Sonic Heroes, a brief skirmish occurred after Shadow and Rouge provoked Team Sonic into a fight; during this encounter, Tails expressed concern about Shadow’s amnesia. In Sonic Battle, their conflict escalated when Tails resisted handing over Emerl to Shadow, ultimately leading to a confrontation. Despite Shadow’s warning that he would return for Emerl, Rouge intervened, redirecting Shadow’s focus. In Sonic Rivals 2, their paths crossed once more as they pursued Eggman, although they ultimately remained adversaries.
Despite their occasional conflicts, Shadow and Tails maintain a strong bond and seem to genuinely respect each other. This camaraderie is evident in their interactions, such as Shadow’s supportive role within Tails’ team in Metropolis, where he offers mechanical ideas and assistance alongside Eggman. Additionally, Shadow proves helpful in locating Omega, providing valuable insights to aid Tails in his search. When the player successfully locates Omega, Shadow expresses gratitude towards Tails for his assistance. Overall, while they may find themselves on opposing sides at times, Shadow and Tails demonstrate mutual respect and support for each other, often aiding one another in times of need.
Knuckles the Echidna
Do whatever you need to, Knuckles. I’ve got my own reasons for being here.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow and Knuckles have had limited interaction throughout their encounters, often oscillating between being loose allies and bitter rivals. In Sonic Adventure 2, they initially found themselves on opposing sides, indirectly adversaries, before ultimately collaborating to save the world from the threat posed by the Space Colony ARK. Their first significant confrontation occurred in Sonic Heroes, although at the time, Shadow did not remember Knuckles. After their encounter, Knuckles humorously suggested that they may have fought Shadow’s ghost.
In Shadow the Hedgehog, Knuckles appears in various stages seeking Shadow’s assistance in Hero missions, indicating a willingness to work together towards common goals. Similarly, in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), they temporarily allied to navigate through challenges and return to the present timeline.
However, despite these instances of cooperation, there appears to be an underlying sense of bitterness and resentment between Shadow and Knuckles. In Sonic Rivals, Shadow bluntly pointed out Knuckles’ shortcomings, displaying an indifferent attitude towards his challenges, while Knuckles seemed irritated by Shadow’s presence. Knuckles’ disapproval of Shadow’s demeanor is evident in Sonic Free Riders, where he remarks on Shadow’s ego in a somewhat annoyed tone. Overall, while they may occasionally collaborate, their relationship is characterized by a degree of tension and mutual dislike, stemming from differences in personality and approach.
Amy Rose
I know that people fight over the most trivial things. Some people may be selfish, like the professor said, but they’re basically good. If they try their best and never give up on their wishes, they always have a reason to be happy. That’s why you should help them out. Saving them is a good thing!
Amy Rose, Sonic Adventure 2
Shadow and Amy Rose have had limited interactions throughout the series, but these encounters have left an impression on both characters. In Sonic Adventure 2, Amy mistakes Shadow for Sonic and hugs him, briefly catching him off-guard. Despite the misunderstanding, Shadow does not react aggressively and simply glares at her quietly. When Amy realizes her mistake, she runs off upon spotting Dr. Eggman. Later aboard the ARK, Amy implores Shadow to save the world, appealing to his sense of morality. Her words trigger a flashback of Maria’s plea for Shadow to make people happy, prompting Shadow to confront the Biolizard, determined to keep his promise to Maria and Amy.
In Sonic Battle, Amy expresses excitement and concern upon learning of Shadow’s survival through Rouge, but becomes angry when Rouge refuses to disclose his whereabouts.
During Shadow the Hedgehog, players have the option to assist Amy in finding Cream the Rabbit, allowing her to fight alongside Shadow during the stage and boss battle. At the game’s conclusion, Amy displays faith and admiration for Shadow, despite his rivalry with Sonic. She reassures Rouge with a cheerful smile, expressing confidence in Shadow’s well-being.
These interactions highlight Amy’s positive outlook and unwavering support for Shadow, even in challenging circumstances. Despite their limited interactions, Amy’s influence leaves a lasting impact on Shadow, reminding him of his promise to Maria and affirming his commitment to protecting humanity.
The Commander
Shadow, do you read me? First… I want to apologize for the other day. Actually, I just became a grandfather last week, and I was thinking of maybe having you over. I know that training is tough, but try and do your best.
The Commander, Shadow the Hedgehog
The Commander and Shadow initially held enmity towards each other due to the Commander blaming Shadow for the deaths of his family and Maria fifty years ago during the G.U.N. raid on the Space Colony ARK. Throughout the game, the Commander orders his troops to eliminate Shadow, driven by his desire for revenge. However, after the events of Shadow the Hedgehog, the Commander extends an apology to Shadow and invites him to his house to meet his new grandchild. This gesture signifies a reconciliation between the two, and it is presumed that this interaction marks the moment when Shadow becomes a G.U.N. agent.
Metal Sonic
Even the Ultimate life form can’t stop me!
Metal Madness, Sonic Heroes
As Dr. Eggman’s prized creation, Metal Sonic is typically regarded by Shadow as both a formidable adversary and a threat. This sentiment was prominently showcased during the Neo Metal Sonic incident, wherein Metal Sonic, in his upgraded Neo Metal Sonic form, clandestinely acquired Shadow’s data along with other data to enhance himself into Metal Madness. Recognizing the malevolent and destructive nature of the robot, Shadow cooperated with Team Dark and other teams to divert Metal Sonic’s attention, allowing Team Sonic to access their Super States for battle. Subsequently, Shadow and Omega retrieved Metal Sonic’s deactivated body, although their ultimate decision regarding it remains undisclosed.
However, another facet of Shadow’s perspective on Metal Sonic emerged during the Ifrit incident, when Eggman dispatched Metal Sonic to recruit Shadow for halting the Ifrit’s release. Despite their prior conflicts, Shadow agreed to collaborate with Metal Sonic for the greater good. Throughout their endeavor to locate the Chaos Emeralds, Shadow displayed moments of concern for Metal Sonic’s well-being, particularly when the robot sacrificed part of himself to enable Shadow to utilize Chaos Control and escape the Chaotic Inferno Zone. Whether Shadow’s concern stemmed solely from Metal Sonic’s utility in combating the Ifrit or indicated a degree of respect for the robot remains ambiguous.
Nevertheless, during the second World Grand Prix, Metal Sonic and Shadow reverted to antagonistic terms, as Metal Sonic infiltrated Team Dark disguised as E-10000B, clandestinely assimilating data from every racer’s Extreme Gear to enhance himself.
Team Chaotix
You should thank me for letting you live.
Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Heroes
Shadow has had numerous encounters with the Chaotix Detective Agency, starting with a confrontation in Sonic Heroes that escalated into a physical altercation. However, their differences were set aside when they united against an evolved Metal Sonic. In Shadow the Hedgehog, Team Chaotix resumed their role as allies, with each member participating as a partner in hero missions across various levels.
Individually, Vector considers Shadow a friend, as evidenced in one of the endings of Shadow the Hedgehog, where he attempts to console Shadow when the hedgehog expresses doubts about his identity. However, Shadow appears unwilling to hear Vector’s reassurances. Espio has demonstrated camaraderie with Shadow, and the two have proven to be an effective team when confronting Dr. Eggman. Espio advises Shadow not to fall for Eggman’s deceit and encourages him to defeat the doctor. Charmy exhibits a more enthusiastic admiration for Shadow, frequently expressing how “cool” he finds him. All three members of the Chaotix provide support for Shadow during the final story and Expert Mode.
Infinite
I’ve only become what I am because of you, yet you don’t remember. But I suppose that’s the way it goes. It simply means that the old me was too weak, too pathetic to remember. And now, you’ve become nothing more than an insect, waiting to be crushed underfoot.
Infinite, Sonic Forces (Episode Shadow)
Shadow first encountered Infinite when he was still known as the Ultimate Mercenary. He decimated the Jackal Squad group led by the Ultimate Mercenary. Despite the Mercenary’s confidence in his abilities, Shadow easily defeated him before he could retaliate, leaving him terrified. Shadow expressed his disdain for the Mercenary, calling him worthless and instructing him never to show his face before him again. However, this encounter would later have significant consequences when the Ultimate Mercenary fused with the Phantom Ruby to become Infinite.
Months later, Shadow encountered Infinite again, who reminded him of their previous encounter. Infinite then showcased his enhanced abilities by trapping Shadow within a Virtual Reality world using the Phantom Ruby. This encounter left Shadow shaken and disturbed by Infinite’s revealed intention to defeat Sonic.[74]Sonic Team (7 November 2017). Sonic Forces. Nintendo Switch. Sega. Area/level: World Map. “Infinite: Hahaha… Oh, this power, before we’ve even tuned it! Just as I thought, it is unrivaled! Not even Sonic will be able to stand against me now! / Shadow: Sonic? What are you plotting? / … / Shadow: What–IS this? STOP! Where do you think you’re going, Infinite?!”

But because of the reaction of the fans, we decided to bring him back in Sonic Heroes and eventually you saw him in his own title.”
