Sega Game aToshokan (セガゲーム図書館 Sega Gēmu Toshokan?, lit. "Sega Game Library") is a game service exclusively released in Japan distributed along with Mega Modem addon for the Sega Mega Drive, in the form of a special cartridge. Games for the service were released between 1990 and 1992, with a total of 28 games being released.[2] The second model of the Mega Drive, released on 23 April 1993,[3] removed the EXT port that the Mega Modem connected through, eliminating the ability to use the peripheral and therefore the Sega Game Library, though the service had already been discontinued at that point.

With the cartridge in the Mega Drive's cartridge slot, Mega Modem connected, and a Sega Meganet subscription, owners of the systems could download and play select Mega Drive games exclusively available through the service, which were released between 1990 and 1992. The internet ran at a speed of 1200 baud per second[1] (equivalent to 1200 bits/second). It was possible to connect over dial-up to play online.[4]

Sonic the Hedgehog games[edit | edit source]

Only two Sonic-related video games released on the service, with just one of them later receiving a physical media release outside Japan.
