==Concept and creation== While several people have been involved in the creation of Sonic, the artist Naoto Ohshima, programmer Yuji Naka, and designer Hirokazu Yasuhara are generally credited with the creation of the character. In April 1990, Sega sought a new mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario; then-Sega president Hayao Nakayama in particular wanted a character as iconic as Mickey Mouse. Sega had previously used Alex Kidd as their mascot, but because he was considered too similar to Mario, he was deemed unsatisfactory. The team at Sega's AM8 R&D department submitted several designs, including a wolf, bulldog, robot, and warrior character. However, they focused on speed, inspired by Naka's attempts to complete Super Mario Bros.s World 1-1 as fast as possible, Initially named "Mr. Hedgehog", Sonic's final name was chosen to represent speed. Sonic was originally colored teal; it was later changed to dark blue to match Sega's logo, stand out against certain backgrounds, and symbolize peace and coolness. Ohshima combined Felix the Cat's head with Mickey Mouse's body for Sonic's design, with inspiration from Michael Jackson's boots on the album cover for Bad and Santa Claus' red and white color scheme for his shoes. Beyond aesthetics, Sonic was designed to be easy for children to draw. His personality drew from Bill Clinton's "get it done" attitude, who Ohshima felt embodied a modern sensibility of wanting to get things done right away.<ref>{{Cite web |author=Yahoo Playback |publisher=Yahoo!
