There are a total of sixteen playable characters in Sonic at the Olympic Games. Initially, only Sonic is playable, but the others become unlocked as the player progresses through the Story Mode. Similar to the 3DS versions of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, each character is exclusive to certain events. However, Sonic is playable in all events. While individual stats were not present in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, each character has their own sets of stats for each event. Each character also has SP depending which events they are available on. While Sonic gets these for free by playing an event for first time during story, Specials for other characters must be bought by using spirits and training points.
