Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games

The all-new games are heating up!

— Tagline

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (マリオ&ソニック AT ロンドンオリンピック[1] Mario & Sonikku AT Rondon Orinpikku?, lit. "Mario & Sonic AT London Olympics") is the third installment of the Mario & Sonic series published by Sega in North America and Europe and by Nintendo in Japan for the Wii. This game features new sports, such as football, and was released on 15 November 2011.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

The title screen of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games plays quite similarly to the previous entries in the Mario & Sonic series, bringing together the title characters from both franchises to participate in Olympic events.

Each of the twenty playable characters in the game feature different statistics that allow them to excel at various types of events. The game features five of these stats: acceleration, max speed, skill, power, and stamina. Along with these, each character is assigned a type that corresponds to their strongest skill and fits their characterization.

Although each event is played slightly different, they all involve the motion controls that the Wii is known for. The game features two different control schemes: Wii Remote (horizontal or vertical) and Nunchuck style. The events all have a "recommended" format but can be played either way.

Other modes[edit | edit source]

London Party[edit | edit source]

Main article: London Party

London Party is the multiplayer party mode in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It consists of events and Bonus Games played through interacting with various characters from the Mario and Sonic games. Players compete to earn stickers, which are awarded upon winning the various games. The first player to fill their sticker sheet, of 16, 32, or 48 spaces depending on the game settings, is declared the winner.

  • Mission List: This holds every Bonus Game the player has played in the London Party game mode. By selecting a game, it can be played outside of the London Party by up to four players. There are a total of 36 Bonus Games, including Rival Showdowns.

Bonus Mode[edit | edit source]

The Bonus Mode holds the Mii customization aspect, jukebox and event music options, and the scratch card system.

  • Scratch Cards:
    • Scratch: One scratch card is awarded for every event played and five are gained for each sticker sheet filled in a London Party. These consist of six grey squares, two of which the player will be able to "scratch" as if they were using a coin. If the images under the boxes match, the corresponding prize will be won. "Extra chance" and "Sorry" boxes exist as well, with them respectively providing a second shot at choosing a square or ending the card then and there.
    • Blank Exchange: This is the shop in which the player can purchase various items with any scratch cards they did not win a prize on. There are three categories, with each containing items that cost two, five, and ten blank cards respectively.
  • Mii Costume Change: Here, the player can dress their Mii up in various outfits, which can be obtained through the shop or by winning them off a scratch card. Each accessory changes the stat values of the Mii wearing it, meaning that the player can completely customize the performance of that Mii, along with making them look however the player wants.
  • Sound:
    • Jukebox: The jukebox functions the same as the Sound Test found in past Sonic the Hedgehog titles. Here, the player can listen to various in-game music, along with a selection of tracks from various Mario and Sonic games. However, these tunes must be bought in the store or won with a scratch card. Four categories of music reside here: Event Sounds, L. Party Sounds, Theme Sounds, and Mario & Sonic Sounds.
    • Gameplay Music: Along with listening to the music, the player can adjust the tracks played in each event through this option. Each event's background music can be changed to any unlocked Mario or Sonic songs, along with the original music composed for the game.

Records[edit | edit source]

The Records menu allows the player to view all their high score in each event, along with statistics such as most played as character and most played event.

  • Player Data: This menu displays data from the selected profile.
  • Event Records: The high score for each event can be viewed here, along with the character or team used to get it. By pressing - on the Wii Remote, the leaderboard of the local profiles can be viewed, and by pressing + the global ranking could be viewed through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.[note 3]
  • Challenges: This menu shows the player each challenge that exists in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, along with their progress in the current level. Upon completion, the icon for the challenge will feature a red bar on top of it that reads "CLEARED!" and the date of which this was done is shown in description to the right.
  • Stickers: Displays every sticker that the player has obtained in London Party divided into seven pages. By selecting a sticker, the event or Bonus Game in which it was obtained is shown at the bottom of the screen. There are no hints or information given on the stickers which the player has not collected.

Mail[edit | edit source]

Mail is where certain characters, such as Cream or Toad, will send the player letters to congratulate them on various achievements. Sometimes these letters will include a Mii costume.

Options[edit | edit source]

Options hold various game settings which the player can adjust.

  • Change Profile: The active profile can be swapped here, plus the option to create new profiles if there are not already four.
  • Language: The language that both the audio and the text is displayed in can be changed, options in the North American version of the game include: English, French, Spanish, and Japanese.
  • Game Settings:
    • Set COM Level: Allows the player to adjust the computer's AI level across all events. Options include easy, normal and hard.
    • Advice Display: Toggles whether advice messages are shown after each event.
  • Friend Roster: This will connect the user's Wii to the internet through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and allow access to their friend list's leaderboards through the Records menu. It also lets the player see their own friend code so that it can be given out.[note 3]
  • Credits: Displays the people behind Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and also includes a confirmation screen before rolling them.

Nintendo Power gave the Wii version a 7.0 rating in their November 2011 issue, stating that the game had events that weren't just minigames, but good ones too.[11] IGN gave the game a 7.5 rating, saying that the game is a recycled version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games with the events, but liking the Dream Events and the London Party.[4] Jason Venter of GameSpot praised the engaging nature of the game, but noted that some events quickly becoming repetitive and stating that it "perhaps relies too heavily on your fondness for its leading mascots."[8] PALGN gave Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games a 6.5 out of 10, saying that it is "some nice nostalgia for Mario & Sonic fans."[13]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

    • Only the Announcer was dubbed in these languages.
  • This is the first game in the Mario & Sonic series to not feature any new playable characters.
  • The trailer shows Mario participating in the trampoline event while Sonic is participating in the track event, emphasizing their famous abilities of jumping and running, respectively.
  • This is the first Mario & Sonic game to feature the new Sonic voice cast.
  • This is the last Sonic game to be released on the Wii.
  • This is the only Mario & Sonic game to feature Monty Moles.
  • This is the first Mario & Sonic game to show Dream Events in the cinematic opening outside of gameplay.

  • In Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Vector's arms have been recolored a darker green, as opposed to being the same color as his underbelly.
  • The remix of "Splash Hill Zone" featured in the game was first heard during the 2011 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, to mark the return of the Sonic balloon as the lead of the parade after it was out of commission since 1997.
  • The remixes of "Angel Island Zone" and "His World" in this game are the same remixes that were featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • Each female character has three outfits: a normal Olympics outfit for most events, a winter Olympics outfit exclusive to the equestrian event, and a new outfit for swimming and gymnastics. Also, swimsuits were originally planned for the first game, but were implemented first in this one.
    • Originally, all the characters were going to have swimsuits as well. However, Sega rejected the idea as Sonic is not allowed to have his shoes removed.[14] However, Sonic does wear a life jacket in aquatics, although it is blue instead of yellow as it was in previous games.
