Sonic the Hedgehog is teleported to Earth and meets Chris, a young boy. Together they set out to find Sonic’s friends while also fighting the evil Doctor Eggman.
Season 1 & 2
On Sonic’s home planet, Dr. Eggman has managed to collect all seven of the Chaos Emeralds along with Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao and is about to achieve his goal of absolute power, when Sonic comes to the rescue. During the battle some stray bullets manage to hit the “Energy Amplifier” while it was activated, causing an explosion that transports everyone to another dimension that’s inhabited by humans. It is here that Sonic and his friends befriend the Chris Thorndyke’s family and begin their adventure to stop Dr. Eggman from gathering the Chaos Emeralds and his evil plans for world domination. At the end of the first season, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic and defeats Dr. Eggman and releases a gigantic Chaos Control, to return everyone back to their own dimension. However, instead of teleporting Sonic managed to bring Angel Island to Earth.
It’s during the second season that Sonic and his friends discover that Chris’s world and their own were once one and the same, but a disastrous event caused the planet to be split in two. They also learn that for every month that passes on Sonic’s world an entire year passes on Chris’s World. Both worlds are now beginning to merge once again and Sonic and the others must return to their own dimension before time stops completely.
Season 3
During season three, six years have passed on Chris’s world since Sonic and his friends have left for their own; and we find Chris working on his grandfather’s dimension portal. Sonic on the other hand, has his hands full with a new adversary, Dark Oak. After nearly being defeated by Dark Oak, Sonic manages to scatter the Chaos Emeralds throughout the galaxy to prevent his foe from gaining even more power. Chris manages to fit the dimension portal and now finds himself in Sonic’s dimension, but something strange has happened to his body. Instead of being the same age he entered the portal (18 years-old); he now looks six years younger. Not too long after Sonic and Chris are reunited, Dark Oak and the Metarex Army attack and manage to steal the “Planet Egg” from the planet. Now the plants on Sonic’s planet are beginning to wither and the only way to save them is to retrieve the egg from Dark Oak, but he will need the help of Cosmo, a plant being looking for someone that can use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to stop Dark Oak and the Metarex Army. During their travels together to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and his friends have many encounters with both Dr. Eggman and the Metarex Army along the way.
4Kids Censorship
In order to keep scenes politically correct, every show licensed by 4Kids is whitewashed until “children in English-speaking countries [are able to] understand it…,” (Pennington, 2005) and the stereotypical demographic sticker of ages 6-11 can be applied to the show. Sonic X is no stranger to this treatment. Scenes that may have contained offensive material to the targeted demographic, such as weapons, violence, romance that isn’t important to the plot, and any remote sense of stereotyping are completely removed or are censored for the children’s sake.
