There’s been a lot of discussion online about Sonic’s character writing in the main continuity, especially in the IDW Comics.
A common criticism is that Sonic’s been dubbed "Sonic the YAPPER," acting more like a Marvel superhero than the "chill guy with a heart of gold who does the right thing just because he wants to." And honestly, I have to agree—to some extent. There are moments where Sonic feels a bit out of character in the comics, though that’s likely because different writers are involved. With so many creative voices, a few missteps or misinterpretations are inevitable.
And then there are the games, like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Colors, where Sonic’s writing felt… off. It’s as if the writers didn’t know what to do with him—or any of the characters, really.
The early 2000s gave us a more "badass" Sonic, possibly because he leaned more into action and less into quipping. Thinking about it, Sonic’s personality has always been about "actions speak louder than words," even with his cheeky, confident side. But in recent games, there’s so much more talking than doing. Even when the action does happen, Sonic often feels stiff, but that’s a whole other topic.
So, what do you think of Sonic’s writing lately? Has his personality changed over the years, or am I just yapping like Sonic himself?
