Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive report on Sonic the Hedgehog 3, exploring how director Jeff Fowler and voice actors Ben Schwartz and Keanu Reeves are preparing for an intense new chapter in the Sonic franchise, especially with the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog. Fowler, who has been involved with Sonic content since his early days at Blur Studios, shares how Shadow’s character adds a “dangerous” new layer to the Sonic universe, answering fans’ wishes for darker themes. Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves, brings depth and complexity as an engineered rival, infusing Sonic 3 with themes of genetic engineering and a grittier tone that Fowler believes fans will love.

Jim Carrey takes on a dual role as both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Prof. Gerald Robotnik—Shadow’s creator—doubling the challenge but adding a rich generational conflict that Fowler calls essential to the plot. Carrey’s transformation into Gerald, which involves extensive makeup and prosthetics, heightens this dramatic clash.

The movie incorporates Shadow’s origin story faithfully, including his connections to the Alien DNA project and his bond with Gerald’s granddaughter, Maria (played by Alyla Browne). Fowler hints at emotional scenes as characters explore their backstories, with Maria serving as an emotional anchor in Shadow’s intense journey.

With Reeves joining Schwartz, Idris Elba (Knuckles), and other returning cast members, Fowler notes that Shadow’s presence brings a new level of spectacle, promising several “Avengers moments.” Fans will also see familiar elements from the Sonic games brought to life for the first time, such as Chao and Chao Gardens—reimagined as a fictional Tokyo-inspired restaurant—adding an anime-inspired depth to the Sonic world.

As the December release date approaches, Fowler teases another exciting post-credits hint toward future characters. With its larger scale, grounded yet adventurous tone, and integration of beloved video game elements, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of all ages.
